London, New York, San Francisco – what do these places have in common? At first glance, not much, but if you’ve followed the news in recent months, it’s evident that all three cities have seen a decrease in population and a drop in rental prices. As the ongoing pandemic allows more employees to ‘work from home’, or anywhere really, people continue to trade their expensive 1-bedroom apartments in the city for more affordable places elsewhere. Let’s have a look at some amazing alternatives to move to in the United Kingdom.

Exeter

Exeter has been a popular choice to live for Ex-Londoners. The ancient Roman city in the county of Devon is small but has lots to offer. Affordable housing, beautiful nature, a highly-rated university, The University of Exeter, various restaurants and bars, a football team, and the Exeter Racecourse. So, whether you’re into academics, hiking, partying, or enjoying a bit of horse betting and other forms of gambling, Exeter is a good choice. What’s more; if you don’t want to give up London completely just yet, it’s worth knowing that there is a direct train that takes you to Paddington Station in as little as two hours.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and, much like London, has plenty for you to see and do. It’s a little busier than most seaside towns, and Edinburgh is known for being a cultural hub; it hosts several festivals, including the Fringe and International Festival, and there are plenty of tourist attractions to enjoy too. Reports also suggest that Edinburgh has low levels of crime when compared to the rest of the UK, which means it’s great for families!

Brighton

Brighton is another seaside town and a great destination to move to. Brighton and its surrounding Hove area is a great place to live; there are dozens of residential areas with gorgeous houses, there are plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy, beaches to visit, and several tourist attractions, including the Brighton Palace Pier, the Royal Pavilion, the observation tower, and so much more. The city is also widely regarded as one of the “happiest places to live in the UK”, so it’s well worth looking into!

Cardiff

Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and it’s a city steeped in history. Like many of the other destinations we mentioned here, there are plenty of tourist attractions for you to enjoy in Cardiff, as well as plenty of restaurants and bars, landmarks and attractions, plus so much more. It’s a wonderful place to consider home, and if you don’t want to live in the city, it’s worth considering the neighbouring residential areas, which won’t be as busy and offer quick connections into central Cardiff.

Leeds

Our final suggestion is the city of Leeds. Today, the city is one of the most populous regions of the Yorkshire and Humber region. Like Cardiff, Leeds is steeped in history as it was previously a major location for industrial work. Leeds is home to three universities, which means it’s a great education hub, and there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and attractions to visit. If that’s not enough, Leeds is located in the county of Yorkshire, which is filled with gorgeous landscapes of the British countryside.

The five cities we’ve mentioned are great places for you to move to if you don’t mind bustling cities. If you’re after something a little quieter, there are plenty of options for you to consider; it’ll just take some thinking and planning. At the end of the day, the United Kingdom is a diverse nation, and there are plenty of destinations big and small for you to call home.
