When identifying trees in spring and summer, the first thing we usually look at is the leaves. Many have familiar shapes and characteristics that can tell us that a tree is an oak, or a beech, or a sweet chestnut, for example.

But how can we identify deciduous trees in the winter, after they have lost their foliage? Help is at hand.

To celebrate the start of National Tree Week, the East Devon District Council Countryside team are organising a Winter Tree Identification walk. It will take place in the Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve near Colyford on Saturday 23 November, 10am-12.30pm.

The walk will be led by Mike Lock of Axe Vale and District Conservation Society, who will point out exactly what to look for in order to recognise woodland trees in winter.

Cost: Donations to Axe Vale and District Conservation Society.

Places are limited, so booking is essential – call 01395 517557 or email Countryside@eastdevon.gov.uk.

The meeting point will be at the car park opposite the water tower at the top of Seaton Down Hill (SY 233913). Please do not park at Horriford Farm.
