Sleet and snow is forecast for Devon as temperatures are set to drop below freezing this weekend and into next week.

A severe weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for tomorrow (Saturday), valid from 3am until lunchtime.

A forecaster at the Met Office said: “A band of rain, sleet and snow will spread east across the region on Saturday morning. 2cm-4cm of snow is likely to fall on  high ground, chiefly over the moors, but there is a risk of some snow at lower levels.

“Icy patches may form, especially on untreated surfaces and the puublic should be aware of the risk of some difficult driving conditions.”

The five day forecast is as follows:

Today:
A cold day with showery rain, locally wintry, in the south gradually clearing eastwards. There will be sunny spells and further wintry showers following, locally heavy with possible hail and thunder. Winds will be much lighter than on Thursday. Maximum Temperature 9C.

Tonight:
Cold and mainly dry with clear spells. There will be a fairly widespread frost with localised ice patches likely. However, further scattered wintry showers are likely from the northwest later. Minimum Temperature -4C.

Saturday:
Another cold day with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers, locally heavy and thundery. Some snow is possible, especially over the hills and moors. Outbreaks of rain are possible later. Maximum temperature 10C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Cold, with sunny spells and wintry showers. Overnight frosts with isolated fog and ice patches. Outbreaks of rain, sleet or possibly snow are likely on Sunday and again on Tuesday.
