Hop to it! Frogs is coming to Exeter
All-female Hecate Theatre Co. have never shied away from reworking the classics and their five-star (Theatre Bath, June 2014) Frogs is no exception. Aristophanes' Greek comedy tackles art, politics and ego-mania, asking the big question: how much do we really value the theatre?
Hecate's thoroughly modern Frogs follows the god of drama, Dionysus, down into the Underworld to find the greatest writer who ever lived. Whereas the original text features Greek playwrights, Charles Scherer's script includes a literary smack-down between William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, while Sara Garrard provides a quirky percussive soundtrack. This zany comedy is full of slapstick humour and sharp wits, all in a murky, post-apocalyptic set, where the grotesque 'frogs' are the storytellers, an ensemble cast of five females.
Following a sell-out run at the Alma Tavern in June 2014, Frogs is now touring the South West, 8-16th April 2015. Further information and tickets can be found on the company website: www.hecatetheatre.com/shows.
Frogs will be on stage at Exeter's Barnfield Theatre on 11 April.
