Spirit of the Exe: An Exe-travaganza

Everybody is invited to an Exe-travaganza on the Piazza Terracina at Exeter Quay from 11am on Saturday 1 August. 

Spirit of the Exe is a free festival for all the family which will celebrate everything that's good about the estuary. As well as being a globally important site for wildlife and an area steeped in maritime history, its also a hub of leisure activities, as well as being a place of beauty and pride for local communities.

The event will include everything from live music and guided walks, to creative fun for all ages and activities on the river, and much more.

The Extreme Mountain Bike Show will be at the festival, the UK and Europe’s number one mountain bike and Trials/BMX demonstration team lead by the Multiple British and European trials bike champion Danny Butler. Come and watch the only show to include ‘bike dancing’ and be in with a chance to grab a Show Giveaway.

Learn about the fascinating and beautiful life in our British seas with displays and activities with marine biologists. Join one of the heritage tours on the historical Quayside, or explore the natural wonders around the Exe with Devon Wildlife Trust.

Find out more about the fantastic recreational activities that you can get involved with on the Exe, there will event be some free taster sessions! Or bring your bicycle to have a free Dr Bike safety check with Ride On – Cycling For All.

The ‘Inside Outside Craft Market’ will be in the Transit Shed, featuring local artists, craftspeople and makers.

There will even be competitions to win some fantastic prizes! Travel by public transport and show your train or bus ticket to be entered into a free draw to win prizes which include free clip and climb sessions, complementary tickets to Powderham Castle, free train tickets and a complementary professional massage at the Massage Centre on the Piazza Terracina. As well as the Exe Estuary Management Partnership the event has been generously sponsored by the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust, Devon County Council, Exeter City Council, Exmoor National Park and supported by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership.

Organiser Stephanie Clark, Exe Estuary Officer, said: "The festival will be a showcase for the clubs, organisations and businesses that are part of the life and vibrancy of this very special place. There will be lots to see at the festival for all ages… and all for free! So come along and take part in this celebration of the estuary.”

Councillor Bernard Hughes OBE, Chairman of the Exe Estuary Management Partnership said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to bring the free festival to Exeter this year.  There will be plenty to see and do for all the family and we hope to make this year an even bigger success.”
