Exeter Racecourse has launched its annual ‘Win A Share in a Racehorse’ competition prior to the start of its new season which begins on October 8.

The racecourse has teamed up with popular Devon trainer Martin Hill who will be offering an ownership experience with Rydon Pynes, a seven-year-old set to begin his novice chasing career in the Autumn. He has won two hurdle races and finished in the frame on another six occasions.

Martin, who trains near Totnes in South Devon, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Exeter on this initiative and hopefully the winner will have a few good days racing with us and enjoy their introduction to racehorse ownership.”

Rydon Pynes fits the bill perfectly. Named after a street in Exeter, the competition winner will be sharing their experience with his existing owners who are all businessmen based in the city.

John Coombs, of Simpkin Edwards LLP, along with Simon Barnett and Simon Moore, both of Michelmores Solicitors, own the gelding along with Martin.

“He’s a lovely big horse with strong Exeter connections and he’s won at the racecourse before,” said Martin who added, “Exeter is one of my favourite racecourses and it’s a great place to start a horse off, whether it’s in a bumper race, over hurdles or fences.”

General manager Daniel Thompson said: “It’s a fantastic competition and we’re very grateful to Martin for partnering with us in this for the 2015-2016 season. We hope the lucky winner enjoys some fun days out at the races and experience the same luck as last year’s winner who had three wins.”

Westcountry born and raised, Martin has a huge following in the Westcountry having saddled many winners both on the Flat and over jumps. Among them are Apex, who scored five in a row, Ryedale Ovation, BallyConn, Tzora, Detroit Red, and Bold Perk.

The competition is open to anyone who pre-books to attend either race meeting on October 8 or October 20. Anyone who signs up to the Exeter Racecourse e-newsletter will also be entered into the competition and the winner will be drawn at the racecourse on October 20. Terms and conditions apply to the competition.

The first race of Exeter’s new season comes under orders at 2.25pm with a free bus available from Exeter St Davids and Exeter Bus Station and a free racecourse tour an hour before the first race. Racegoers will also have the chance to meet a racehorse in the new stable.
