Classic American car show comes to Cofton
A mix of muscle cars, hot-rods and American classics including Chevrolet’s, Cadillacs, trucks and Jeeps will be turning heads and thrilling fans at the annual American & Classic Car Show held at Cofton Country Holidays near Starcross on Sunday 03 July.
Set to be the biggest event of its kind in the South West, the National Can-Am Car Club hopes that this show will be a record breaker, both in terms of the number of cars on show and the number of fans attending the event.
Over 100 ‘Classic’ American and Canadian cars are already booked to attend and anyone arriving in a ‘classic’ American or Canadian car will gain free entry to the main show on the Sunday.
Among the star attractions are a Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee, as seen in the blockbuster film Transformers, a World War 2 Willys Jeep, a 1963 Pontiac Catalina Custom, a 2016 Dodge Hellcat Muscle Car, a 1975 Pontiac Trans am Bracket Racer and a 1968 Buick Le Sabre, as seen in the hit series Breaking Bad.
Starting on the Friday evening the weekend of activities kicks off with a beer festival in the main marquee, a great selection of American food and music from The Fabulous 59 Ford, a fantastic high energy Rock n Roll / Be-Bop band that has previously supported acts including Tom Jones, Jeff Beck and Chrissie Hinds.
On Saturday evening the beer and food festival continues supported by a breathtaking Elvis tribute act staring Adam Cater, reputed to be the best act of its kind in the UK.
Earlier that day Cofton’s cavalcade of classic American and Canadian cars will set off from Cofton at 11.30am and will cruise into Teignmouth. Over 50 cars are expected to participate in the cruise and the show organisers hope that the spectacle will draw hundreds of additional fans to the main event the following day.
On the Sunday over 100 of America’s best know classic cars and vehicles will be on display from 10am. Visitors can get up close and personal to learn more about the rich history of the cars from their colourful owners and listen to the purr of their engines.
In addition to great American food and local beer in the main marquee, show goers can look forward to a variety of trade stands selling a range of products including America gift wear, T-shirts, retro diner products and much more.
Throughout the day there will be judging by vehicle class with a series of trophies awarded to the winning owners. However, the biggest prize of all will be down to the public vote, the winner of which will receive the People’s Choice trophy, a huge cup imported from all the way from the US.
Commenting on the show, event organiser Keith Bloomfield, chairman of the National Can-Am Car Club, the oldest American Car Club in the UK, said: “This year’s show is set to be our largest yet in the South West. We’ll have everything from a 1940’s Pick up truck to a 2016 Dodge Hellcat and we’re expecting a few surprises too.
“We’re hoping that owners of Shelby Mustangs, Ford Mustangs, Dodge Chargers, Buicks, Pontiacs, Plymouth’s and a host of other classics will join us on Sunday 3rd July to be part of the best American car show in the West.”
Keith added: “It would be great to think that we could set a record that we can look to beat next year when we celebrate our 50th anniversary as an American car club.”
Tickets to the Sunday show cost just £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for children and can be bought on the gate. Anyone arriving in an American vehicle will be given free entry. Music and entertainment, food and drinks will be available in the main marquee. Access to entertainment in the main marquee is free on Friday night and Saturday night.
Show goers will have access to Cofton’s main facilities too including the heated indoor and outdoor pool, restaurant and pub. Visitors will also have access to miles of cycle paths and nature trails that take visitors through woodland, parkland and mature meadows to Dawlish Warren beach and nature reserve.
