11th year of Sing for Fun Exeter
It's official, Forever Young Sing for Fun in Exeter is now in its eleventh year.
Most research says that singing is good for you and … your … heart; memory; breathing; social life; wellbeing; mood; soul; asthma; snoring; happiness ... So if I want to sing in a group, but not with a choir, will I still get all the above benefits? As most of the research has been carried out with choirs - the answer is unknown. But why wouldn't you want to sing in a choir? After all they are not all church-based, or just sing spiritual music. Many sing a wide-range of music under the guidance of experienced and talented people. Most choirs give public performances, raise money for charity and I'm sure there is one of the many in Exeter that would appeal to you.
Oh, I see, you don't always want to sing in a group that gives public performances or always have to rehearse or learn songs or attend enough times to be eligible to sing at the concert or sing under a leader or conductor [no matter how nice they are] or wear similar clothes as other singers or have to harmonise or sing tenor, contralto or alto if you don't feel like it or just not sing because you don't think your voice is good enough and you think other people will be better than you and it will just be embarrassing so you think you will just stay singing in the shower and car … alone … by yourself … oh, you have a friend that you sing with in the shower?
Oh, sorry, in the car.
I, too, felt this way and I never joined a choir but, eleven years ago, we started Forever Young Sing for Fun on most Mondays at St Sidwell's School, York Road, Exeter. I can honestly say that singing with others in a group, that is not a choir, is good for you. We do not rehearse, don't give public performances [we have a number of charities we donate to] do not have a leader or conductor, the singers choose the excellent backing tracks each week and I still sing in the shower and in the car … not always on my own!
