Commemorative book ‘100 years of Devon bus travel’ celebrates the centenary of bus travel in the region
Local transport author and Stagecoach South West Commercial Officer, Pat Avery, has written a book marking the centenary of The Devon General Omnibus and Touring Company Ltd one of the best loved and remembered public transport operators in the country.
The 96 page all colour hardback book ‘100 Years of Buses in Devon’ has been released to commemorate the centenary of The Devon General, and showcases how bus travel has changed and developed over the years.
All profits from book sales will go to local South West based charity Westbank Community Health and Care, in Exminster. Since 1986 Westbank has been delivering health and wellbeing support to people across Devon.
Bob Dennison, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, said “100 Years of Buses in Devon is a wonderful kaleidoscope of local bus history. We hope that this book will be a fitting tribute to this centenary year, and are delighted to be able to support the Westbank Devon charity in this way.
“Stagecoach South West is proud to be part of the Devon General centenary celebrations and, as we prepare for the next 100 years of bus travel, Stagecoach remains committed to support and connect communities across the South West.”
In addition to transport enthusiasts, the book is also likely to appeal to south west residents and those interested in local history. Featuring captivating photography, the book documents Devon’s fascinating past and provides a rare glimpse into the lives of local people over the last 100 years.
Matthew Byrne, Chief Executive Officer, Westbank Community Health and Care said “We are delighted that Stagecoach South West has selected Westbank as their beneficiary of book sales. We understand the importance public transport plays across our county. Stagecoach South West and Westbank both play an important part in keeping older and vulnerable people connected to their communities.”
Paul Jenkins of the Devon General Society said “Since 1919 the colourful red and cream Devon General buses have given locals and holiday-makers the chance to explore South Devon. The first buses in Devon were loved and appreciated by many people, and it is a delight to celebrate them and the development of bus travel 100 years on.”
