How can I keep my vehicle roadworthy during COVID-19?
Covid-19 has had an impact on all of us and there are plenty of things that we have had to think about, plan for and ultimately make changes to. Things that normally are straightforward, are a whole lot more difficult when you are faced with a global pandemic. Whilst you may be able to figure out a better way to do things if you know what you are doing, when it comes to making sure that your car is completely roadworthy, things can be a little trickier to figure out alone.
To help make sure that your car stays on the road, even when you are not able to easily book in with a garage as you normally would. We have put together our top tips on keeping your vehicle roadworthy during Covid-19. Not only can these tips prove useful during lockdowns and the recovery period that we will have post Covid. But they could also prove more useful in the long-term too.
Drive it when you can
If you are working from home and you have shopping being delivered, then chances are that you have realised that you are not driving your car as often as you used to. It is sitting there, idlily watching the world go. Of course, this is great for saving you money on petrol, but not being driven on a regular basis can actually harm your car. Now, we are not saying that you should be driving around needlessly, but it is a good idea to at least take your car out on a regular basis. Not only will this help you to remember how to drive (although we are sure it is abit like riding a bike, just without the pedals) but it will also help your car to have a run too,
Give your car a clean
Whilst you should always remember to clean the outside of your car (or book in to have it cleaned by someone else on a regular basis) it is all too easy to overlook the interior of your car. At this time, it is vitally important that we get used to cleaning a variety of surfaces that we come into contact with, which even goes for our car. Covid-19 can be transferred to a variety of surfaces, so you need to give your car a clean as often as you can.
It is important to focus on high contact areas within your car when it comes to cleaning. This includes your door handles, steering wheel and your dashboard, you should also think about any touch screens or buttons that you may press on a regular basis and also the handbrake and switches too.
Of course this doesn’t make the difference between your car being roadworthy or not, but it gives you the peace of mind that you are protecting yourself and your family from the dangers of Covid-19 whilst they are in your car.
Release the handbrake
If you are not planning on driving your car for a few days, then one top tip is to make sure that you don't leave it with the handbrake on. This can lead to the brakes seizing up if it happens for a long time and therefore should be avoided if you can. Of course, this is not something that you can are allowed to do if you park on a road and isn’t possible if you are on a hill, but if it is possible for you to do then you should consider it as an option.
Despite your best efforts in ensuring that your vehicle is roadworthy during Covid-19, any vehicle can develop a fault that cannot be fixed, or that will be too costly to fix. This means that you have no other choice than to arrange for the car to be scrapped.
Scrapping your vehicle means that it is taken from you and no longer needs to be stored on your property. You also have the benefit of knowing that it is being disposed of in a way that is proper and follows the regulations that are set out. Finally, having your car scrapped raises money, that can then be put forward to buying a new car for yourself and for your family.
