Phat classes for fat people in Exeter
A new fitness class for plus-size people has secured funding to run a low cost pilot in Exeter.
Phat Health was set up to help people who are told to lose weight and get more active but don't feel comfortable in mainstream gyms and fitness classes. Jess Crew PHAT Programme Organiser said, "many gyms and fitness classes say that everyone is welcome but in reality they just don't cater for larger bodies."
Maresa Bossano, Wellbeing Exeter Community Physical Active Organiser commented, "We are very excited to be supporting this community project. People in Exeter have been telling us that in mainstream classes aren't always suitable so this is a great initiative to get people active at every size".
Classes start on November 2nd. The price is subsidised so it's just £2.50 for an hour of Move and Flow at St Thomas Methodist Church Hall. This is a combination of feel good cardio and conditioning yoga. The online option is £1.50 for 45 minutes of Move and Firm which is a zumba-style cardio with focus on strength exercises to firm the core muscles and other large muscles. People on a low income should contact the organiser if these prices are unaffordable.
Enroll or get more information by emailing phat.class@gmail.com by October 31st.
On the name, Jess explained "PHAT means excellent, it's a bit of a play on words as "fat" has been used negatively but something "phat" is the opposite - excellent. Our classes are definitely phat!"
