Cranbrook celebrates landmark milestone with the opening of Morrisons supermarket
Cranbrook celebrates a landmark event, with its first large supermarket opening in the run up to Christmas and the town centre quickly taking shape.
The supermarket’s arrival is seen as a pivotal moment in the evolution of Cranbrook, which has been steadily developing since the first foundations were laid in 2011.
The new town has grown significantly, now having more than 3,000 homes. This number is expected to grow to around 8,000 homes with an eventual population of more than 20,000 people, making it one of the biggest towns in East Devon.
To date, other key Cranbrook milestones have included:
2011: The first turf was cut, and the first stone was laid to begin Cranbrook’s journey.
2012: The first house was occupied in August, followed by the opening of St Martin’s Primary School in September.
2013: The Younghayes Centre opened in November, providing a focal point for the community.
2015: Milestones abounded, with the GP surgery and pharmacy opening in April, Cranbrook Town Council forming in May, and the 1,000th home being occupied in June. By December, the first train pulled into Cranbrook station.
2017: The Cranberry Farm pub opened, becoming a favourite gathering spot for residents.
2022: The EX5 Alive community hub opened at Cranbrook Education Campus, further enhancing local resources.
The opening of Morrisons now marks a new chapter, as Cranbrook’s town centre becomes a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.
A catalyst for further development
Councillor Paul Arnott, Leader of East Devon District Council, emphasised the importance of this moment for the town:
“I am very glad to see the long-promised supermarket for Cranbrook finally open. Our first thanks must go to the local people in the community who have had to wait so long. Your patience has not been taken for granted, and behind the scenes, EDDC councillors and officers have been relentless in getting this over the line for many years. Thanks to all of you.
"This is clearly a key milestone for Cranbrook, which we hope will bring people into the town and act as a catalyst for further development. Cranbrook town centre is really starting to come to life. It's a great new community, and I can’t wait to see it further unfold."
A true community achievement
On behalf of the Cranbrook ward councillors (Councillor Kim Bloxham, Councillor Sam Hawkins, Councillor Kevin Blakey), Councillor Blakey reflected on the significance of the occasion:
“The creation of the town centre has been a long time coming, but now the keystone business is in place, we can expect the development of a commercial and social heart for the town to gather pace. This is a truly significant day for all the residents of Cranbrook and its neighbours.”
Morrisons brings more than groceries
The new Morrisons supermarket is set to provide not only fresh produce and household essentials but also job opportunities and a central meeting point for the community. Its opening just ahead of Christmas makes it a timely addition for local families and highlights Cranbrook’s growing appeal as a place to live, work, and shop.
