Boy airlifted to hospital after colliding with a car on Alphington Road

Update 23 June: Exeter Police report have provided further details on the collision that occurred at approximately 5pm on Saturday 22 June 2013 between a Nissan Skyline and a 12-year-old boy on his bicycle on Alphington Road.

A police spokesman said: "The Nissan Skyline, driven by a 29-year-old local man, was travelling outbound from the city centre towards the Marsh Barton turning. The bicycle ridden by a 12-year-old local boy was using the dedicated cycle lane and was also heading outbound in the same direction as the Nissan.

"It appears that the cyclist attempted to jump his bike onto the pavement but has clipped his pedal on the kerb which then tipped him into the path of the Nissan as it was passing, colliding with him towards the rear nearside of the vehicle. This occurred outside No 69 Alphington Road."

The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and was treated initially at RD&E before being airlifted to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol.

The driver of the Nissan was uninjured.

A specialist forensic investigation of the scene took place and officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to this incident to contact them on 101 quoting log 700 of 22 June 2013.

 

22 June: Police are appealing for witnesses after a 12-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when his bike was involved in a collision with a car on Alphington Road, Exeter, at approximately 5pm this evening (22 June).

The boy was initially taken to R D & E Hospital, but following initial assessment was transferred to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, who specialise in treating children.

A section of the road was closed to allow for reconstruction work. If anyone was in the area at the time and saw what happened, please call the police on 101 quoting log 700 of 22/06/2013.
