Schools contribute to Devon Carbon Plan at Youth Climate Forum

Climate experts and over 100 Devon students put their heads together on Friday to propose, debate and determine how best to reduce carbon emissions in the county.

It was all part of The Devon Youth Climate Forum held at County Hall and hosted by the Devon Youth Parliament.

The Forum was one of a series of opportunities that Devon’s young people will have to contribute to the Devon Carbon Plan, a blueprint which will lay out what we all must do to create a net-zero county.

According to the latest WWF data, 80% of the people in the South West are concerned about the environment.

The environment comes joint second in the UK list of concerns as a nation-beating crime, economy, housing, education and employment, only behind healthcare.

On Friday 29th November at Exeter Phoenix, Luke Hagan, Claire Horrocks and Jonas Hawkins of Two Short Nights Film Festival presented 5 prizes to a full house at a buzzing awards ceremony at the 18th edition of the short film festival.

Running over three days and spanning over 14 individual events the festival featured nearly 100 short films from 13 different countries. With a focus on South West talent almost 50% of the films features by created by a South West based filmmaker or were produced in the region.

Quirk Theatre have given the original story of The Velveteen Rabbit a modern twist. The toy rabbit in the play is compared with iPads, LOL dolls and mobile phones, but manages to reach beyond the technology and touch her owner’s heart. Smarthouse showcases personalised technology solutions

A pop-up, purpose-built house showcasing a range of assistive technology used to support vulnerable adults to live independently in their own homes went on display in Exeter last week.

Created by national learning disabilities charity Hft, the Smarthouse featured innovative, interactive technology, including a talking microwave, safety sensors to prevent flooding or injury, and finger-print activated door locks which replace the need for keys.
