Healthy lifestyle may offset genetic risk of dementia

Living a healthy lifestyle may help offset a person’s genetic risk of dementia, according to new research.

The study was led by the University of Exeter - simultaneously published today in JAMA and presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2019 in Los Angeles. The research found that the risk of dementia was 32 per cent lower in people with a high genetic risk if they had followed a healthy lifestyle, compared to those who had an unhealthy lifestyle.

Exeter group conquer Three Peaks Challenge for charity

A group of fundraisers from Exeter completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours on Friday 12 July, to raise vital funds for charity Parkinson’s UK.

The group were inspired to take on the climbing challenge by a family member of one of the climbers, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. They fundraised nearly £7,000 for the charity by completing the challenge.

A CORNISH folk singer will be honoured with one of the highest awards in the folk world at the Dartmoor Folk Festival on Sunday, August 11.

Vic Legg, will be presented with an English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) Gold Badge.

Such gold badges are presented for unique or outstanding contributions to folk music, dance or song, distinguished service to EFDSS and/or exceptional contributions to EFDSS' work.

Next Steps South West’s work at Exeter College is set to continue as the National Collaborative Outreach Programme has been extended for a further two academic years, with a new completion date of 31 July 2021.
