Learn the basic elements of silk shading & stitch a small flower, enabling you to continue working with this technique at home. Sometimes known as painting with the needle, this is an embroidery technique which uses fine threads and needles. It can take time to become confident, but it helps to persevere.

We will start the day by working through all the elements of successful silk shading one by one. We will then move on to combine all these elements in one piece. We will stitch a small flower motif which will provide lots of useful practice. By the end of the day you will...

Learn how to design & plan an embroidery project during this practical & fun day. Includes methods of transferring designs. Some of us think that planning an embroidery project is almost as much fun as stitching it. This is a practical day on how to convert an idea into a piece of embroidery.

We will cover:

· deciding on an appropriate technique - what works, what doesn't?

· planning stages e.g. stitch plans, colour plans

· design transfer methods eg prick and pounce, stitching through tissue, light boxes etc

Parents in the South West of England are awash wtih children's creativity

The average child will in the UK produce more than 2,000 arts and crafts pieces for their parents before they turn 12, according to a study*. And those items tell the story of their childhood through art.

Researchers found that parents in the South West of England face an uphill struggle to find space for the masses of drawings, greeting cards and ceramics produced by their little ones.

International Baccalaureate (IB) results put Exeter College ahead of the international curve

Exeter College students are celebrating after achieving the best International Baccalaureate (IB) results in the college’s history.

This year the prestigious IB saw a 100% pass rate, with almost a third of students (32%) achieving 40+ points. This is the equivalent of five A Levels at A/A*, putting them in the top five to ten per cent of students in the entire world. Two candidates achieved an incredible 43 out of 45 possible points.

Honiton’s Gate to Plate event is making a welcome return to the town on Saturday 10 August.

Featuring around 50 fine food, drink and craft producers, there will also be cookery demonstrations by some of the area's top chefs and food experts who will be presenting their work in an on-street show kitchen.

The free event will continue the town’s wonderful and long established market tradition, which dates back to the 13th Century when Honiton was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market.

Cheekily named theatre company ‘Gone to the Dogs Productions’ is bringing a kids’ show about democracy to the Exeter Fringe on 1 stAugust.
