‘Green shoots’ for music education but more investment needed

The retiring musical director of Exeter Cathedral, Andrew Millington, has called for more investment in children’s musical education, saying it can transform lives.

Andrew, who has been made a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music in recognition of his contribution to church music over the last 40 years, said the increasing interest in choirs and singing, that has given birth to the Military Wives choirs and others, showed there were some ‘green shoots’ but that many church choirs were struggling.

Biker Down course proves popular

A new initiative called Biker Down, South West held a successful pilot workshop on Saturday 6 June at The Devon Travel Academy at West Point Exeter. The course is a free first aid course created by bikers for bikers designed specifically for treating injured riders.

Biker Down involves a three hour course that is broken down into three modules delivered by Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Fire, Bike Team:

Brothers combine coaching with charity

Two Exeter School brothers are planning a trip of a life time for a deserving cause.

Lower Sixth Former Tom Counsell and his brother Will, who is the Upper Fifth, are volunteering for four weeks over the summer as rugby coaches in Swaziland.

The duo will be working with the Swaziland-based charity SKRUM, whose aim is to give the school children of Swaziland social awareness and sex education while having fun and playing rugby.

Both boys are on the school's 1st XI rugby team of which Tom will be captain next season and they regularly play for the Exeter Chiefs...

Items stolen from vehicle in Lympstone

Police have received reports of a theft from a vehicle parked on a drive Lympstone.

The vehicle had been left unlocked in the Underhill area of Lympstone and items stolen, including an Apple iPad, between 5.30pm on Tuesday 9th and 7.10am Wednesday the 10th June.

A police spokesman said: “We are asking for local residents to be vigilant and ensure that their vehicles are locked and items removed when left unattended.

Exeter apprentice named VQ Learner of the Year

Exeter's Josh Ellis has been named the winner of the VQ Learner of the Year Award 2015 for England, in recognition of his outstanding achievement following a vocational qualification in Plumbing at Exeter College.

Josh, 21, won the gold medal at the World Skills competition, with his work deemed ‘near perfect’ by the judges.

Josh has since progressed to a Level 3 Plumbing qualification and become the main installer for his company due to the exceptionally high standard of his work. He is now successfully juggling a very high demand for his work with his further studies at...

McGuigan agrees new Chiefs deal

Byron McGuigan has spoken of his delight after today agreeing terms on a new one-year deal with Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs.

The 25-year-old Namibian is the latest name to commit his future to the Devon club, having initially arrived at Sandy Park on a short-term deal to cover compatriot Chrysander Botha.

McGuigan, who has previously played for Border Bulldogs, Glasgow Warriors and Bay of Plenty, featured 17 times for the Chiefs last season, scoring three tries - including one on the final day of the season against Sale Sharks.
