Chiefs flanker Scaysbrook wants to finish on a high

Exeter Chiefs flanker James Scaysbrook says the lure of playing in next season's Heineken Cup is all the motivation he and his team-mates need to finish the current campaign on a high note. With just one game remaining in the scheduled fixture list - that against Gloucester at a sold out Sandy Park next Saturday (2.30pm) - the Devon club know a victory over the Cherry & Whites will ensure they will be competing alongside Europe's elite again next term. The Chiefs head into the final round of fixtures in sixth place, two points clear of rivals Bath, who themselves still harbour Heineken...

Notes from an Idealist

"If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”. There is some debate as to whether Henry Ford, to whom this line is often attributed, ever actually said this. Irrespective, it does raise some interesting questions, mainly about asking the right questions.

Any business, in establishing a client’s needs and requirements must ask the right questions. In my profession, for example, it is vital to establish need and objectives before recommending a suitable investment strategy. However, this is rarely as simple as asking a client what they want to achieve....

A sea bear has arrived at Living Coasts in Torquay.

The male South American fur seal called Karel arrived on Wednesday from Halle Zoo, in Germany. The German for seal is Seebären, which translates as sea bear.

Karel is nine years old, but is ten in June, while Torquay’s coastal zoo marks its own tenth birthday in July. He currently weighs in at 83 kilos – that’s 182 pounds or 13 stones – and measures 1.6 metres nose to tail. He will get a little bigger as he matures

He joins Living Coasts’ two female seals, Grace, who is 12, and Tunanta. Tuna, as she is known, was...

Blog from PCC Tony Hogg: "I am impressed generally by the effectiveness and commitment of officers and staff"

Wherever I go, people ask me whether I am enjoying being the Police and Crime Commissioner. I always tell them that enjoying is probably the wrong word. Relishing? Yes! Challenged? Definitely! Enjoying? I suspect that will only come when the impact of decisions I make is really felt, and Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is even safer than it already is.

I’m lucky to be PCC for this region. Yes, it’s one of the largest policing patches in the country. It faces considerable resourcing challenges to cover urban, rural and coastal issues, but I am impressed generally by the...

Neil Parish MP met Holocaust survivor Agnes Grunwald-Spier at the launch event for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014. Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is commemorated each year on 27 January – the liberation of the Auschwitz death and concentration camp. HMD provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides (in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur) and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust promotes and supports HMD activities in the UK. Each year HMDT selects a theme around...

Exmouth resident, Michael Griffin held a James Bond-style party at the Exmouth Pavilion on Saturday 20 April. Both volunteer Deputy Coxswains from Exmouth RNLI were invited to help raise money towards their latest appeal.

When Michael started planning his 60th birthday party, fundraising for the charity that saves lives at sea played a key part. As a keen sailor and member of the Exe Sailing Club, Michael asked guests to donate money to the Institution, in lieu of presents. But his fundraising plans developed further and volunteers from the town’s lifeboat station were invited to...

Keep glass and mirrors away from the sunshine

Sunshine is forecast over the next few days! Every year at this time Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service attends a number of fires caused by the sun’s rays focussing through or onto glass, and then setting fire to nearby objects.

At this time of year the sun is low in the sky, and shines directly through windows, so any mirrored or glass items close to the window may re-focus the sun’s rays onto combustible items, often curtains, heating them up to a point where they spontaneously ignite into flames.
