John Thorp, an expert on ornamental plasterwork, will describe the history of decorative plasterwork in Devon from 1550 to 1720, tracing its spread from aristocratic houses to the lower gentry and eventually the more prosperous farmers.

Devon writer’s collection at Exeter Poetry Festival

The archive of a West Country author, Ronald Duncan, who lived in north Devon all his writing life, has been acquired by the University of Exeter. Its arrival will be celebrated by a special display at Exeter library during this year’s Poetry festival on 5 October.

The collection is a record of the life of Ronald Duncan who came to Welcombe in the 1930s and lived and farmed breeding pigs and horses until his death in 1982. Widely regarded as one the finest musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber has crafted one of today’s most successful careers in classical music.

He has premiered more than 50 works for cello and inspired new compositions from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold, Joaquin Rodrigo and Philip Glass. He has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians and his many recordings have met wide acclaim.

Julian has been vice-president of the Delius Society since dedicating himself to performing the cello works in 1971 at his London recital debut.
