Writing a press release made simple

One question we are always asked here at Astley Media HQ is ‘How do I write a press release?’ It can be a daunting task and often it’s best left to the professionals but follow our simple 8-point guide and you won’t go far wrong:

1) Be honest with yourself about whether whatever it is you want to write about is interesting enough. That may sound obvious but a lot of press releases fall at the first hurdle because they are boring or are nothing more than a plug for a business or product. Use the ‘pub test’. If someone told you what you are planning to put in your release, would it...

A partnership is no better than the people in it

Of all the arrangements people use to conduct their business, none is more fraught with danger than the simplest: partnership. The problem is that the basis of any partnership is sharing.

That should be easy. Two partners, two shares. Generally fifty-fifty.

Well, it isn’t so easy. In the burlesque era, comic teams used a different formula. The straight man got 55 percent, the funny man got 45 percent. Why? The straight man was the agent for the team, responsible for getting the bookings, negotiating the b illing, all the nuts and bolts stuff.

Avoid overloading your electrical sockets

Most people have extension leads in their homes, often using four-way bar adaptors to increase the number of appliances that you can plug into a wall socket.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service remind you that although there is space to plug in four appliances, this does not mean it is always safe to do so.

Different electrical appliances use different amounts of power. To avoid the risk of overheating and possibly fire, you should never plug into an extension lead or socket appliances that together use more than 13 amps or 3000 watts of energy.

What to do if your Employer goes insolvent?

With the recent collapse of Jessops, Comet, HMV and Blockbuster, employees are finding themselves in a situation where they are having to assess their rights and entitlement.

Employee Rights

There is a difference between an employer being in liquidation and administration. If your employer is in liquidation, there is no continuing business and you will have no job. Where your employer is in administration, an administrator will be appointed and will be brought in to see if the business can be kept alive and whether a buyer can take over the whole of the business.

The Association of British Insurers says the cost of the disruption over the Christmas period due to flooding is expected to reach £1bn.

The total bill in 2012, some £13bn, is equivalent to the UK’s entire 29 million-strong workforce going on strike for two-and-a-half-days, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The flood insurance pay-out bill for 2012 is expected to total around £800 million - the highest since 2007’s £3.7billion.

Malcolm Tarling, ABI spokesman, told the newspaper the indirect cost is even greater to tourism, lost working hours and delays.

Citizens Advice survey to hold payday lenders to account

As the new payday lending customer charter is launched, Citizens Advice Bureaux across the country are today releasing new figures demonstrating a worrying increase in the number of serious debt cases relating to payday loans.

In the first quarter of 2009/10 only one per cent of CAB debt casework clients had at least one payday loan and in the same quarter last year this had risen to four per cent...

Exeter University has seen an outbreak of Mumps this term, with 16 cases reported in the last week.

This contagious viral infection is most recognisable by the painful swellings located at the side of the face under the ears (the parotid glands), giving a person with mumps a distinctive "hamster face" appearance. Other symptoms include headache, joint pain and a high temperature.

The University Health Centre has advised anyone with similar symptoms to get in touch and, if diagnosed, it is advised to stay out of lectures or study groups for five days. While the infection is...

Time to think about your compost says the RHS

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Advisory Service is encouraging gardeners to check their compost before winter. Lush growth this summer means there are now heaps of grass and hedge cuttings that, if prepared properly, could be made into useful garden compost.

“Autumn is the ideal time to check compost heaps,” says Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticultural Advisor. “Some gardeners will have just dumped their grass cuttings in a corner, which potentially will now be a smelly, slimy pile. But if mixed with the straw-like material produced in gardens at the end of...

Long Distance Relationships

Parents, especially mothers, find it very hard to be away from their young children for long periods of time. In the same way, kids will often scream their head off when their parents leave them.

What’s the cause of this kind of separation anxiety? I think it’s basically the bond formed between two people who are in a loving relationship. One can’t help but have the other person in mind all the time. The same thing holds true for lovers. Even before my husband and I were married, I could hardly wait for him to call or meet me, and for weekends when I knew we could spend more time...
