Ashley's 24-hour challenge begins

Devon businesswoman Ashley Petrons is just hours away from starting her effort to complete 24 feats in 24 hours and raise £1,000 for the Exeter Foundation.

Swimming in the River Exe, training with the Exeter Chiefs and serving behind the bar at the Southgate Mercure Exeter Hotel in Southernhay, are amongst challenges facing Ashley (pictured second left) of Exeter-based public relations and marketing firm Astley Media.

Three of the challenges will be picked from ideas suggested by followers of @Devon_Hour on Twitter, hosted by Ashley for an hour last week, and in doing so,...

How can you supersize your business?

Growing large vegetables is a pursuit that is largely underrated. For, to produce a giant carrot, onion or cabbage takes persistence, an intimate knowledge of your subject and dedication. At the Chagford Show in Devon recently I marvelled at the incredible specimens on display. This humungous harvest was the result of months of effort, blood, sweat and tears and yes, sometimes, failure. Everything from the choice of seed and the time of planting to the watering regime and the thinning out process went into producing these incredible results. The extra minutes spent eliminating bugs or...

The incredible story behind a pair of blue boots

These are no ordinary pair of boots, and not for the reasons you may think.

The fact that they are blue makes them stand out from most footwear of a similar nature, for sure.

But what is quite extraordinary about this pair of boots is the woman who wears them.

Robyn Steward has a condition called prosapagnosia which means she does not recognise faces, but recognises people by their shoes!

Because of Robyn’s physical disabilities, she needs to wear boots, and her visual impairment makes bright colors easier to see, hence her bright shiny blue boots.

So I was at the Devon County Show today and I struck up a conversation with one of the traders. It turned out we both hailed from the same place. He eventually asked me what I did for a living and when I said media and marketing he responded with: “Okay, give me your top three marketing tips”, which I did. And whilst they are fresh in my mind I thought I’d share them through my blog. Tip 1 Look for referrals: I asked him what he did to encourage his satisfied clients to encourage others to buy from his business and, apart from some passive email marketing, the answer was not a lot. However...

Writing a press release made simple

One question we are always asked here at Astley Media HQ is ‘How do I write a press release?’ It can be a daunting task and often it’s best left to the professionals but follow our simple 8-point guide and you won’t go far wrong:

1) Be honest with yourself about whether whatever it is you want to write about is interesting enough. That may sound obvious but a lot of press releases fall at the first hurdle because they are boring or are nothing more than a plug for a business or product. Use the ‘pub test’. If someone told you what you are planning to put in your release, would it...

Exeter Chiefs Colts Battle for Top Spot

Exeter Chiefs Colts V Brixham Colts

Exeter kept up their challenge for top spot in the Devon RFU Colts Shield competition hosting Brixham at Withycombe RFC. This season the boys have been rewarded with kit sponsorship from Astley Media, who have kindly provided warm up tops and playing shorts and socks.

They took to the pitch with pride in their new clothing. The ground staff at Withy had done a good job and the pitch was in great condition considering the atrocious weather we had after Christmas.

Brixham started well, trying to feed their forwards who were...
