A new service launched this week will offer bereaved families in Exeter and Mid Devon additional support from Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity, when a loved one dies at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E).
Families of patients who die either at the RD&E or who have had support and care in the community from the RD&E will receive a phone call from a specially trained, locally recruited, Marie Curie Companion who will offer a series of weekly telephone bereavement support calls.

FORCE is launching a new project to offer more support to people who have lost a loved one to cancer.
The area’s leading local cancer support charity already offers face-to-face support and advice for those who have lost a family member to the disease.
It is now starting a pilot scheme to provide FORCE Bereavement Support Days. The first one will be held at Cardinal Newman House in Exeter on Thursday March 22 (10-4) and there are still places available.
The support day is open to anyone bereaved by a cancer death from three to 18 months ago.
“If there is one guarantee in life that’s absolute, it’s death. We are all going to die. However, many never give this a second thought until it happens to someone we are close to. When it does, it can shatter lives. That’s why it’s so important that we talk about death and drop the old stiff upper lip attitude.”

An elderly Exeter couple are tying the knot after finding love at the city hospice.
Christina Crocker, 67, and Charles Harris, 78, met at the Hospsicare bereavement support group after losing both their spouses. Their friendship blossomed into romance and the couple are marrying in May.
Both had spent many weeks at the hospice in Dryden Road as their partners were cared for by Hospiscare nurses and doctors. Their spouses died within three months of each other.
