Organisers of last year’s BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend have won another award for the helping to stage the successful event. Exeter City Council and Teignbridge District Council were recognised by the Exeter Living Magazine Awards in the Events category. The Awards were held on Thursday night (6 April) at the University of Exeter’s Great Hall. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​New figures on BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Exeter and the benefits to the city and surrounding area have been released.

Earlier in the year the University of Exeter estimated that the Big Weekend would bring about £3.5 million of benefit to the local economy. Visit South Devon has said that tourism alone would have seen an uplift of around £1.7 million as a direct result of the event at the end of May.

Coldplay are kings of Powderham Castle

Coldplay were kings of the castle when they rocked Powderham as the headline act of the Radio 1 Big Weekend.

Exeter-born frontman Chris Martin was visibly moved to be back on home soil.

Before the band's set began, he even knelt and kissed the stage!

The band raised the roof performing some of their favourite hits including Paradise, Yellow and Fix You.

An estimated 50,000 watched acts including Jess Glynne, Ellie Goulding, Take That, Craig David and Mumford and Sons during the two-day event.

Major crash causes Big Weekend traffic chaos

People heading to Radio 1's Big Weekend at Powderham Castle experienced long delays following a serious two-vehicle collision near Matford roundabout in Exeter.

Police, ambulance, and the Devon Air Ambulance were called at 11.30am today (Sunday) following the collision between a car and a motorcycle on the A379 at Sannerville Way.

The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by the air ambulance.

One lane of the A379 was closed near the BP garage and traffic was moving slowly in both directions. Highways attended the scene to...

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Exeter is in full swing, with 50,000 revelers expected to pass through Powderham Castle’s gates this weekend.

Some of today’s biggest chart acts will be performing live, including the likes of Coldplay, Take That, Mumford and Sons, The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding Craig David, Tom Odell, Sigma, Jess Glynne, Meghan Trainor and Jack Garratt.

Countdown begins to Radio 1's Big Weekend

Ticket-holders for Radio 1's Big Weekend at Powderham Castle near Exeter have just six days left from today (Monday May 16) to book their transport in advance of the event.

Festival-goers have until May 21 to pre-book transport that’s been specially laid on for the event.

Park and rides, shuttle buses and drop-off/pick-up points have been arranged to get people safety to and from Powderham while ensuring minimum impact on residents and those who may be visiting the area to enjoy the long weekend in this part of Devon.

One pair of Big Weekend Tickets is on offer every day at BBC Radio 1’s Academy between Tuesday 17th and Saturday 21st May at Exeter Phoenix. Academy ticket holders must be in the Academy’s Hangout and enter the live draw at the end of each day’s Academy activities. Plans for Radio 1’s Academy revealed

BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning have announced plans for BBC Radio 1’s Academy - a month of free outreach activity across Exeter and Teignbridge in the run up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend that aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in creative careers.

Now in its fifth year, Radio 1’s Academy will include a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area, which begins in Teignbridge in April and culminates in Exeter in May with a week of radio shows, gigs, practical workshops and Q&As.
