Exeter Family Friendly raise £2.5k

A team of executives from Exeter Family Friendly raised £2675 for Devon-based charity Rainbow Living after cycling 72 miles from Wellington to Salcombe.

Starting at 8:30am, Exeter Family’s Andy Chapman (CEO), Simon Philp, Paul Austin, Alan Ord and Adrian Hodgkinson crossed the finish line at 16:30pm, to raise money for the protection provider’s charity of the year.

Rainbow Living provide housing for adults with learning disabilities so they can live with their peers in supported accommodation and the funds raised from the cycle will go towards the charity’s third house....

Police are appealing for the public’s help following two separate bike thefts which have taken place in Exeter this month.

Bicycle theft from Stuart Road in Exeter

Three bikes have been stolen following a break-in on Stuart Road, Exeter including a Trek Madone US Postal Services bike worth £2,000 (pictured).

This bike particularly identifiable as the pedals were originally black but have been filed back to look silver/chrome, and has a silver and blue coloured frame. A white ladies bike and a grey/silver Trek bike was also taken at the same time.

New funding secured for cycling in Devon

New funding has been secured for cycling in Devon, as the County Council announces that cycle trips in parts of the county have risen by over 20% in the past year.

Devon County Council has received a further £675,000 from the Department for Transport to fund more schemes as part of the Granite and Gears project, which aims to develop a network of multi-use trails to open up access to Dartmoor.

City soldier's 1000 km static bike ride

A local soldier is challenging himself to cycle 1000 km on a stationary bicycle for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision impaired ex-Service men and women. Steve Tonking, aged 34 and from Exeter, enjoys tackling fitness challenges and will be running the London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK later this year. He is now set to raise the bar and cycle a distance of 1000 km which is equal to cycling from Beeston, Nottingham to John O’Groats. James braves elements to support sister

A Silverton man braved torrential rain to cycle 100 miles to support women like his sister who is battling one of the world’s rarest diseases.

James Blackburn lined up alongside more than 80,000 other competitors for the Ride London-Surrey event on behalf of the charity LAM Action. He completed the race in 05:25:20.

The 47-year-old is raising funds to find an effective treatment for lymphangioleiomyomatosis (known as LAM) which mainly affects the lungs.

Halfords teams up with charity to send unwanted second hand bikes to Africa

Halfords in the Exeter area are to take unwanted bikes off customers’ hands in an initiative to provide much-needed affordable transport for communities in Africa.

For six days, from Thursday 11 July to Tuesday 16 July, Britain’s biggest bike retailer is inviting customers to bring cycles currently lying abandoned in garages and garden sheds to any of its 460 stores.

Those donating bikes will be offered a 10% deal off the price of a brand new model as well as seeing their old two-wheeler go to a good cause.
