An exciting new event comes to Devon for the first time later this year when Hospiscare hosts Wild Tri, and its big brother, Wild Tri Extreme.
This will be a wild take on a triathlon, and promises to be an exhilarating experience that will challenge hard-core extreme event enthusiasts, as well as novices and those who like their events just a tad less challenging. The event will take place near Okehampton on 14 September, allowing plenty of time for preparation.
Routes for both Wild Tri and Wild Tri Extreme will take participants across the bleak and stunning landscapes of...
Instead of snow, it was high winds and rain that tested the ever growing band of men who took part in Hospiscare ’s Men’s Walk this year. Just under 1000 resilient men signed up for the challenge, making it Hospiscare’s most successful Men’s Walk to date.
The weather conditions were again challenging but spirits were high as the walkers set off from the Double Locks pub. Along the route they were buoyed by an amazing team of dedicate volunteers offering support and encouragement. Live entertainment and free pizza was provided at The Waterfront , before returning to the Double Locks...
RD&E helipad will be upgraded to enable more patient landings
Work to upgrade the current helipad at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust will begin this month, thanks to a £1 million donation from the County Air Ambulance HELP Appeal.
The donation has covered the cost of the redevelopment and will allow the introduction of night landings at the hospital. At the moment, the helipad does not have the capacity to support night landings, meaning that its day light operation is limited, especially throughout the winter months. The upgraded helipad will also be...
For the past 8 years, Guide Dogs and TenPin Exeter have collaborated on a very successful fundraising evening. What began as a request for Raffle Prizes for another occasion, has turned into an annual event supported by staff, volunteers, friends & local businesses.
Dog Care & Welfare Advisor, Glenda Webb, and TenPin Manager, Dave Aldridge have combined forces making it not only a great social event but a profitable one, raising money and awareness for the charity. With any luck (and hard work) this year will be no exception! All 22 lanes are already fully booked and the...
Rachel Hamilton, 27 from Exeter, is a Hospiscare staff nurse and has been working for the local charity on the ward at Searle House for two years. At the end of 2018 Rachel married Ben Turner who also has connections to Hospiscare volunteering as a Trustee.
The wedding took place at Dartington Hall at Christmas and as Rachel is a member of the Hospiscare Choir it seemed only natural to ask the Choir to sing during their ceremony. Rachel who has always loved singing, joined the Hospiscare choir’s soprano section as soon as she became a Hospiscare nurse.
Hospiscare’s annual Coffee Morning event is now under way. Throughout the area, people are signing up to raise funds for the local charity by holding coffee mornings in their homes, community halls and even their local parks. Businesses, too, are getting ready to bake and boil for Hospiscare.
Last year, Hospiscare supporters held more than 100 coffee mornings, together raising over £15,000. The charity is hoping to beat that target this year and hoping to raise a whopping £30,000.
Event organiser, Lianne Harding said: “Above all, we want people to enjoy themselves while...
Three years ago, local charity Hospiscare teamed up with Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends to start the Seaton Hospiscare@Home service in response to the needs of people in Seaton.
This service provides 24/7 hands-on nursing support at home for people with a life-limiting illnesses who are in the final months or weeks of life, enabling patients to be cared for and to die at home, if that is their wish.
It proved so popular in Seaton that some patients in neighbouring Axminster swapped GP practices to get access, which up until now has been unavailable. That,...
Hours of training around Exeter will prepare serving Royal Air Force mum Tracie Pickett for the incredible experience of the London Marathon. She volunteered at the event in 2015 and since then she has dreamed of taking part. This year is her chance.
When Tracie read about the work of charity Little Troopers, founder Louise Fetigan inspired her, Tracie said “the work of Little Troopers really resonated with me as my boys know what it’s like to have a mummy or daddy go away for long periods of time. The fact that it was founded by Louise who has previously served in the armed forces...
An RSPCA inspector is set to trek to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for animals in need.
Marije Zwager, an inspector based in Exeter, will be taking part in the trek this September with a group of like-minded animal lovers to raise much-needed funds for the RSPCA.
Everyday Marije experiences first-hand the cruelty that is inflicted on innocent animals and the work the RSPCA does to prevent this. She says this is why she is pushing herself to the limit to raise funds to help even more animals.
“I really enjoy the buzz I get from physical exercise and being in...
