Exeter School changes lives with 15th WaterAid concert

For the 15th year running and with support from South West Water and Ashfords Solicitors, the talented young musicians and singers from Exeter School will perform a special concert to raise funds for international charity WaterAid.

All proceeds from the concert, which takes place at St Michael's Church, Heavitree, from 7:30pm on Tuesday 26 April, will go directly to WaterAid projects in Zambia, helping some of the country's poorest communities gain access to clean water and safe sanitation.

The Second Symphony, from its first performance to today, remains one of Sibelius’ most popular works. Its importance at the time was also due to the Finnish struggle for independence and early reactions to the work included some efforts to read into it an overtly nationalistic, patriotic programme. Much attention was focused on the heroic finale, of course, but also on the long, anguished slow movement, music of great passion and pain, surging along in dramatic waves toward a grim conclusion.

Greg Hancock returned to the UK in 2012 after many years overseas and quickly established himself as a regular performer on the music scene in Exeter and the surrounding region.

He has been writing his own songs ever since he first picked up a guitar at the age of ten. He always tries to find innovative and surprising new song structures and to avoid musical and lyrical cliches.

J S Bach St John Passion, presented by Exeter Choral Society & Orchestra

Concert debut for cathedral’s new choirmaster

Exeter Cathedral’s new Director of Music is looking forward to leading his choristers in concert for the first time since taking up the baton.

British organist and conductor Timothy Noon, who returned to the UK earlier this year to take up the post following a period of work in New Zealand, will direct the renowned Cathedral Choir in a special candlelit performance next month.
