Work to start on road safety improvements in Tiverton

Work on road safety improvements on Blundell’s Road in Tiverton will get underway on Monday 4 July.

The £1.1 million scheme will introduce a series of traffic-calming measures to reduce speeds and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

The first phase of the scheme will establish a 20mph limit in the area around Blundell's Road, extending into Tidcombe Lane. To mark British Nutrition Foundation Healthy Eating Week (13–17 June 2016), schools across Devon are celebrating the results of the Food for Life programme.

An ambulance driver from Crediton has scooped a pair of VIP hospitality tickets to the Devon stage finish of the Tour of Britain 2016.

On Friday September 9 the world’s top cycling teams and riders will race from Sidmouth on the East Devon coast to the summit of Haytor on Dartmoor.

Devon County Council’s budget is in the black for the 25th consecutive year.

The authority underspent by £35,000 in the 2015/16 financial year on a net revenue budget of £500.105 million.

County Treasurer Mary Davis will tell councillors next week: “The financial year has now ended and it is pleasing that the final position is a small underspending of £35,000.”

Residents' parking review underway in Exeter

A consultation is underway on residents' parking in Exeter.

Devon County Council has drawn up the plans for the Burnthouse Lane, Rifford Road, Heavitree, Polsloe and Elizabeth Avenue areas in response to requests from local residents affected by commuter parking.

Residents have until Friday 17 June to comment on the current proposals which are based on feedback from almost 2,000 responses during two previous rounds of consultation last year. £1.9m pothole programme announced

Proposals to carry out £1.9 million of work to prevent potholes on Devon’s roads have been drawn up.

Devon County Council is preparing a programme of repairs using funding awarded from the Government’s Pothole Action Fund earlier this year.

Devon’s £1,952,000 share of the Pothole Action Fund is in addition to £41,155,000 of capital funding which the County Council has received from the Department for Transport.

County helps to save two Devon bus services

Devon County Council has stepped in to secure the continuation of two bus services in East Devon.

Service 688, a Dorset-based service which serves Hawkchurch in Devon on its way to and from Axminster every Thursday, had its subsidy withdrawn by Dorset County Council in April.

The service will be able to continue thanks to a new arrangement between Devon County Council and Dorset Community Transport.

Carers asked to help design support services

Devon County Council and the NHS are asking carers what they think excellent carers’ services would look like in Devon.

The organisations, which form the Devon Carers Partnership, are thinking now about the support services that they’ll be tendering again for in future, so they’ve arranged events around the county to ask carers what they think.

Carers can be all ages, but for this research they’re specifically interested in what adult carers of adults think about support available to them.

Devon County Council appoints new chairman

Outgoing Chairman Cllr Christine Channon handed over to Devon County Council’s new Chairman, Cllr Andrew Moulding, at a meeting of the Full Council on Thursday afternoon (12 May).

Cllr Moulding has represented the Axminster Division as a Devon County Councillor for seven years.

He is also a Town and District Councillor and is currently Deputy Leader for East Devon District Council.

Devon County Council is championing the very first REUSE week this coming May 16th-22nd.

Residents from all over Devon are being urged to repair, refurbish and reuse more.

REUSE week is all about giving the things we own a new lease of life – by repairing, refurbishing, repurposing or passing them on to someone. It’s also about highlighting the treasure trove that is second-hand and pre-loved items.
