Around 3,500 schoolchildren in Devon are to benefit from Bikeability cycle training over the next few months.

Devon County Council has successfully secured £140,000 of funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) to provide the training in the county by August. More than 7,400 children in Devon have taken part in Bikeability over the past year. Since 2009, Devon County Council has successfully bid for more than £1.7 million to deliver cycle training in Devon. Schoolchildren who take part are given real cycling experience and skills to equip them to confidently deal with traffic...

Six Devon residents have won cash prizes by taking their unwanted small electrical items to a recycling centre, instead of throwing them away with their domestic waste.

The prizes, which amount to £325, were won following the first of five prize draws held between April and May which hope to inspire more people to recycle Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE).

At the last count just 30 per cent of all ‘small’ electrical items in the UK are recycled.

The top £200 prize was won by Lindsay Coren, of Tedburn St. Mary, after he recycled a microwave at the...

Community Road Wardens trial pothole repairs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN2oHCfsVow&feature=youtu.be Minor pothole repairs are being carried out by some of Devon’s Community Road Wardens in a number of pilot areas of the county.

Devon County Council launched its Community Road Warden scheme 18 months ago to enable communities to do a wide range of highway work for themselves, which the County Council can no longer do due to reduced levels of funding.

The initiative builds on the already successful schemes in place for public rights of way and the county’s Snow Wardens. It enables a Road Warden to act as the...

Highway maintenance budgets agreed

Devon County Council’s Cabinet today (Wednesday 13 April) agreed its highway maintenance budgets for this financial year.

The Council has received £38.785 million of funding from the Department for Transport for capital maintenance of its highway network, the longest of any authority in the country at 8,000 miles. Cabinet decided how the money will be used for structural repairs that extend the life of everything that makes up the highway, including repairs to road surfaces, retaining walls, bridges, and street lighting.

In addition, Councillors also approved the spending...

Of 150 local councils responsible for education in England, only 13 have better figures than Devon.

The amount of children who miss 15 per cent or more of school time stands at 2.9 per cent in Devon.

In the South West and in England overall, the figure is 3.7 per cent.

Devon County Council has also improved its...

Streetlight upgrade continues across Devon

Work to upgrade more than 24,000 streetlights to LED lighting will continue across Devon next month (April).

The £10.2 million scheme, using Challenge Funding which Devon County Council received following a successful bid to the Department for Transport, will convert streetlights to lower wattage LED lighting, and around 5,000 columns will also be replaced as part of the project.

The replacement of streetlights, on mostly main (A and B) roads, got underway earlier this year in Barnstaple, where around 5,200 lights and 1,100 columns are being replaced, and Kingskerswell,...

Campaign aims to encourage people to report suspicions of child abuse

A third of people who suspect child abuse do nothing to report it, according to the Department for Education.

Many don't report their suspicions because they're worried about being wrong or that they're overreacting, the Government says. But in a new national campaign, being promoted locally by Devon County Council, the message is that you don't have to be absolutely certain about your suspicions before reporting them.

The campaign, 'Together we can tackle child abuse', aims to highlight the fact that everyone has a role to play in protecting children and young people from...
