As recently reported, one of Exeter's oldest parish churches is threatened with closure as St Thomas Church in Cowick Street faces repair bills of around £3m and rising. Its plight has led to a major rethink of how best to look after it and its two sister churches, Emmanuel in Okehampton Road and St Andrew's in Alphington Road, which are also both in need of considerable repair and refurbishment.
St Thomas City and County Councillor Rob Hannaford, who attended the recent well-attended public meeting about these issues adds:
“One option is to make the parish church, which is...
Students and staff at Tiverton High School are claiming the world record for the biggest ever cream tea.
They played host to 559 guests for a proper cream tea yesterday (12 June).
The current world record for the biggest cream tea is 403 people, but an event earlier this year claimed 430.
Pupils from local primary schools, Tiverton students and staff and special guests from the community all joined in to swell the record-breaking numbers which have still to be ratified by Guinness World Records.
Officials from GWR were present at the attempt today.

A messy bit of ground at Exwick Community Centre has been transformed into a child-friendly paved area, enabling young and old users of the Centre to enjoy the outdoor space.
The piece of ground was included in the boundary of Exwick Community Centre when it was built, but it was never levelled by the developers. The land was not able to be used by the centre users and was a maintenance headache for Exwick Community Association, who operate the centre on behalf of the community.
Now with funding from Devon County Council, the existing patio area has been extended to include...
A new study has shown that a system of local electricity generation and a network of underground hot water pipes can be developed to heat buildings in Exeter. The work, commissioned by Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust and the University of Exeter, was prepared by engineering consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff.
The system uses combined heat and power (CHP) engines to generate both heat and...

Staff at a Devon County Council recycling centre in Exeter were shocked to see a cat stranded in a deep container amongst unwanted materials deposited by local residents.
SITA UK employees Chris Murphy and John Hallett who were working at the Pinbrook Road recycling centre on Sunday 12 May, sprung into action to rescue the cat.
They placed it in a second hand cat basket, that was fortunately available in the recycling centre’s resale shop, and called the local people at Cats Protection who were soon on the scene and took the male cat into their care.
