Council applauded for consultation about its budget

A campaign to encourage local communities to have their say on what public services matter most to them has been applauded by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in this year's Local Public Service awards.

Devon County Council's 'Your Community, Your Choice' consultation, 2011/12, included a range of public meetings, supported by an interative website, to involve and engage with the public about difficult decisions the Council faced as it set last year's budget.

Describing the campaign as 'well-thought out', judges awarded it the winner of this year's...

Challenging sewer repair completed successfully

Work to repair a collapsed sewer close to a buried medieval bridge in Exeter has finished today (Friday 8 February 2013).

A section of the 300mm pipe beneath Holloway Street collapsed in January but the repair was complicated by its proximity to the Larkbeare Bridge, a scheduled ancient monument, which lies 2.4 metres beneath the road.

South West Water and its contractors May Gurney worked closely with Devon County Council, which maintains the bridge, and English Heritage, which fast-tracked the required permissions so work could start straight away.

Devon County Council is hosting an information event next week (Tuesday 12th February) in a bid to encourage more people to consider becoming foster families and give those interested the chance to find out whether fostering would be suitable for them.

Devon has over 700 children in care, and just over 300 fostering households. However many current foster carers are approaching retirement age so the County Council needs to recruit new carers.

The children and young people needing foster care come from all sorts of backgrounds, and are unable to live with their own families...

This was the first year of the Recycle Devon Thank You awards, which mark the 10-year anniversary of the Don’t Let Devon go to waste campaign.

Devon enjoys a recycling rate of 55% (2011/12) making it one of the highest recycling counties in the country.

Devon Work Hubs Network goes from Strength to Strength

Devon's network of Work Hubs is continuing to grow with three Hubs fully operational, one more lined up to open next month and an 'associate' Hub in Exeter now part of the group.

The Work Hub scheme evolved in early 2011 when talk began of setting up facilities to help people who worked from home, were self employed or starting up a new business.

It is estimated that around 85,000 people (20% of the working age population) in Devon are home-based, making the Work Hub concept a natural path to follow.

In late 2011, Devon County Council with part funding from the...
