£75,000 grants available to support employment and skills projects

Charities and community groups in the South and South West of England are invited to apply for a share of £75,000 funding for employment and skills projects.

Sovereign Housing Association, working with not-for-profit digital fundraising platform The Good Exchange, has grants available for community projects that focus on supporting people to upskill, access training, find work or better work, or self-employment opportunities.

Projects need to be based within three miles of a Sovereign home and could be anything from community learning programmes and job clubs to homework...

County Hall tree planting celebrates Queen's Green Canopy initiative

Trees have been planted at County Hall in Exeter as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to celebrate the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee.

The commemorative planting by Devon County Council supports the call for everyone to ‘Plant A Tree for the Jubilee’.

Vice Lord Lieutenant Lady Arran, who, with four Deputy Lieutenants, is helping the Lord Lieutenant with the Queen’s Green Canopy, was joined by Deputy Lieutenant, Philip Jenkinson, Devon County Council Chairman, Jeff Trail BEM, and County Council Leader, John Hart.

A pioneering project to help Devon communities become more resilient against flooding and climate change has been awarded just over £7 million of Government funding.

Devon County Council’s initiative 'Managing Big Problems in Small Places' is one of 25 across the country to have successfully secured a share of £150 million funding from the Department for Food & Rural Affairs’ Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP).

Devon taking action to remove Ash dieback infected trees

Urgent action is being taken to remove almost 1,500 Ash dieback infected trees from alongside Devon's major road network this summer in order to protect public safety on the county's roads.

Devon County Council has already started an essential programme of work, with almost 150 infected trees alongside the A388 at Holsworthy currently being felled. From Monday (12 July) work will start on the A399 at Brayford to remove 220 trees with Ash dieback that are within falling distance of the highway.

Devon County Council and partners will once again be sharing a stand, socially-distanced this time, at this year’s Devon County Show from Friday 2 July – Sunday 4 July.

Visitors to the stand will be able to explore exhibits in a COVID-safe space, spanning a range of themes including the environment, Devon’s climate emergency and business support in Devon.

Trading Standards urges renters not to be caught out by banned tenancy fees

Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service has launched a new campaign to help prevent renters in the region being caught out by fees that have now been banned.

The law on what landlords and letting agents can charge tenants when beginning, ending or changing their contracts has changed.

It means renters can no longer be asked to pay extra for things like professional cleaning and having pets, or charged for references and credit checks.

The changes mean that there is only a limited number of fees which are still allowed by law.
