Box office opens for literary festival

Tickets go on sale on Monday 28 July for the sixth annual Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, taking place Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st September.

The festival, which attracts international interest, has grown year upon year and attracts some of the nation’s top authors.

The line-up for this year’s event includes best-selling and prize-winning author Paddy Ashdown who will discuss his new book, The Cruel Victory: the French Resistance and the Battle for the Vercors 1944.

Severe weather warning for Devon

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from tonight with lightning, hail and even possible tornadoes.

A spokesman said: "In this situation large amounts of energy are available in the atmosphere and this coupled with high moisture content can lead to torrential downpours along with frequent lightning activity, large hail and locally strong gusts."

Ladies Summer Hockey League

Over the last two months, the Ladies Summer Hockey League has been played by 10 teams in two pools. The winners and runners commenced to the Semi-Finals last week. Exe beat White Eagles and Exeter cum Vale Hornets won against Isca, taking the game to penalty flicks.

The final last night Tuesday 15th July was a hard fought game with Exe scoring in the first half through a penalty flick from Bridget Culver. After half time the teams were still close but Exe edged away with goals from Laura Allen and Payno. Exe held on to win 3-0 and collected the shield from Club Chairman Jane Bailey...

Angelic voices raise funds for cathedral

Renowned choral ensemble The Rodolfus Choir are travelling to Devon this week to give a special concert to support Exeter Cathedral.

The group, directed by Ralph Allwood MBE, are all young singers who have completed the Eton Choral Course (founded by Allwood 1980).

With a sound hailed as 'unspeakably beautiful' by Gramophone magazine, the choir has established itself firmly over a period of thirty years as one of the leading young choirs in the United Kingdom.

Enjoy an afternoon of exciting summer jumps racing at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Monday 14th July.

Racing starts at 2:10pm, with gates opening at 12:10pm. The last race for the afternoon will be at 5:10pm.

Devon Community Foundation are set to hold their annual Volunteer of the Year awards in October at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter, honouring the hard work and achievements of the hundreds of volunteers contributing to community groups across Devon.

The awards will have an added element of excitement as BBC Radio will be broadcasting the awards live with David Fitzgerald as host for the evening.

Dog walkers urged to pick up after their pets

With almost half of the 5,000 people who visit East Devon’s Pebblebed Heaths every day walking their dogs on the Commons, landowner Clinton Devon Estates is taking steps to help people pick up after their pets.

One of the biggest complaints among visitors to the Heaths, which are one of the region’s most important wildlife sites, is dog fouling, so now Clinton Devon Estates is starting a trial of dog bins at a number of key car parks on the Commons.
