Last chance to register to vote

People who want to vote in this year's elections must make sure that they are on the electoral register by Tuesday 6 May.

This is the last chance for those not yet on the register to be able to vote in the Exeter City Council and European Parliamentary elections taking place on Thursday 22 May.

Exeter Flood Defence scheme to begin

The first phase of the Exeter Flood Defence Scheme is due to start this summer as part of a £36bn programme of infrastructure developments across the UK. The scheme which will cost around £30m is expected to bring an estimated £200m of direct economic benefit to Exeter. Exeter City Council and Devon County Council are each contributing £3 million to the scheme with the remainder is being funded by flood defence grant in aid. Grandson fuels support for Air Ambulances

Gillian and Mike Sexton from Tipton St John, near Sidmouth are Devon Air Ambulance Trust volunteers. They are also organising an event at the Exeter Golf & Country Club on Saturday 7 June in order to raise additional funds, as their way to say a very personal thank you.

Microlight crash in Devon results in fatality

A microlight crash which occured in Colyton yesterday has resulted in a fatality.

Devon and Cornwall Police have today confirmed that the aircraft crash, in which two people were on board, resulted in one man being pronounced as dead.

The crash is now under investigation by the AAIB.

Man killed in Devon microlight crash

Police, the fire service and ambulance crews were called to an area near Colyton on Friday, 18th April after reports of a light aircraft crash. A microlight, with two people on board, had crash landed near the village just after 10am. Sadly a man, aged in his fifites from Wiltshire, died at the scene. A nine year-old boy, also from Wiltshire, was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital with serious injuries. The collision is being investigated by the Air Accident Investigation Branch, not the police. The Coroner has been informed....

Fore Street Closed after Flat Fire

Fore street in Exeter was closed on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a top floor flat. Three appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were at the scene at around 14:08 yesterday (April 17) after being called to the fire involving the window sill and walls of the residence Police closed the road between Market Street and Bartholomew Street while fire crews made the building safe.

M5 Closed by Car Fire

Large traffic jams have formed on the M5 Southbound following a car fire near Exeter this morning.

6 Fire engines in attended the scene on M5 junctions 24 Bridgwater to 25 Taunton when a car and caravan became engulfed in flames.

The smoke from the blaze was reported to have made driving difficult due to reduced visibility.

Police initally closed M5 north and southbound J24-25 because of the fire and asked that Motorists find alternative routes due to heavy traffic building in the area.

£207,220 boost for disability sport in Devon

Active Devon has been awarded a grant of £207,220 from Sport England to develop inclusive sporting opportunities for disabled people.

The Inclusive Sport programme is designed to increase the number of young people (aged 14 plus) and adults regularly playing sport as part of Sport England’s wider commitment to increasing regular sport participation by disabled people.

Council 'flaws' allowed paedophile to offend

Severe flaws in child safeguarding allowed a convicted paedophile to continue abusing two young victims, according to a report released today. The independent report, commissioned by the Devon Children Safeguarding Board covers the services repeated oversight during a five-year period of abuse and the circumstances leading up to the abuser coming into contact with his victims. The abuser, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was a known child sex offender prior to coming into contact with the family.
