Sunny smiles all round as Elizabeth Road play park opens

Hundreds of local children and parents came along to the official re-opening of Elizabeth Road Play Park in Seaton on Saturday 6 April.

Mayor of Seaton Councillor Peter Burrows, who was heralded in magnificently by David Craner, Seaton Town Crier, cut the ribbon and declared the enhanced play area open and ready for fun.

The new equipment in the play area contains £42,000 of improvements including a new Olympic basket swing, climbing walls and frames, spinning swings, a rota roka, and many more exciting features for children to enjoy.

Devon on flood alert after heavy overnight rain

Devon was on flood alert today after torrential overnight rain.

Motorists were facing a tricky journey into work because of strong winds and standing water on many routes including the A376 and A380.

A landslip has closed a long stretch of the A379 road in Shaldon, from Ringmore Road to Deane Lane in Maidencombe.

The landslip is reported to be at least 15ft across and 3ft deep.

A flood warning map (below) issued by the Environment Agency showed 10 flood warnings and 19 flood alerts, including along the Exe. Officials say high tide, expected at around midday...

Ikea in discussions with Exeter Council over site for new store

Rumours and rumblings about the potential arrival of Swedish giant IKEA to Exeter's growing list of big name retailers have rumbled on for years - in 2001 plans to open a store failed because the City Council was unable to identify a site of sufficient size to satisfy the retail giant's needs.

However, we could well be moving a step closer to this becoming reality. It is now believed that a site near Sandy Park and opposite Tesco has been identified as of a sufficient size and therefore the preferred site following discussions with Exeter City Council.

South Hams pub in UK’s top 50 places to eat

The Millbrook Inn at South Pool in South Devon has been celebrating having recently been named as one of the top 50 gastropubs across the entire UK.

The prestigious list is organised by the Morning Advertiser and judged by 500 voters, including celebrity chefs, pub guide editors, food lovers and industry trade chefs.

Just three pubs in Devon were included on the list with the Millbrook Inn joined by the Jack in the Green at Rockbeare and the Masons Arms at Knowstone.

Friends of Michelle Conroy gather to say farewell

On Sunday afternoon, friends of Michelle Conroy gathered outside the St Petrock’s Centre on the Cathedral Green to say their goodbyes. Michelle was the young homeless person who was killed by a falling tree during the storms last week.

About 50 people were present, most of them from Michelle’s ‘street family’. One friend sang a song and then prayers were led by Canon Anna Norman-Walker from the Cathedral. Everyone was then invited to write a few words in a book of remembrance. This will be in St Petrock’s this coming week and then sent to Michelle’s family in the Channel...
