Putting down roots at the Devon County Show: 100 trees to be planted at Westpoint

Devon’s famous Lucombe Oak among 100 new trees to mark the Forestry Commission’s centenary year at the showground in May.

The Forestry Commission is providing100 new trees at Westpoint Showground, home of the Devon County Show, as part of its centenary year celebrations.

A commemorative Lucombe Oak, an evergreen hybrid discovered by Exeter nurseryman William Lucombe in the late 18th century, will be the centrepiece among the new trees being donated by the Forestry Commission. Organisers of TEDxExeter, the South West's leading Ideas Festival, have announced the addition of five speakers to its 2019 programme.

Honiton is delighted to announce that its successful Gate to Plate event is returning for a second year and will be held on Saturday August 10. The event, which is being organised by East Devon District Council and partners, celebrates East Devon’s high quality local food and traditional craft produce and the town centre will be lined with stalls and provide entertainment for all the family. The picturesque estuary town of Topsham, just four miles from Exeter, will be celebrating the end of winter with Spring Forward Saturdayon the 30th March. Just before the clocks go forward to welcome warmer days the town will be buzzing with a fair-like atmosphere, with the majority of shops, cafés and restaurants taking part, and live music around the town.

The event is in its second year and is set to be a fabulous, vibrant day, full of offers from local businesses, Spring treats, children’s activities and foot-tapping sounds from talented local musicians.

“We must do everything we can to encourage more women into public office.”

That’s the message from Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez, who has just taken a lead role in promoting the cause of Conservative women across the South West.

Alison was elected deputy chairman of the South West Conservative Women’s Organisation (CWO) on International Women’s Day.

The CWO supports women in the Conservative Party in a variety of ways and encourages women to stand for office at all levels.
