Church bells will be the back-up warning for flooding in Starcross.

The Environment Agency has worked with Starcross Flood Group, St Paul's Church and flood wardens to create a contingency plan unique to the village if all usual forms of communication fail.

The chances of residents not getting warned by traditional electronic methods via the flood warning service are remote. But every flood plan has a contingency and Megan Debenham, the Flood Group Co-ordinator for Starcross, suggested using the 18th and 19th-century bells in St Paul's Church.

A community choir was on song for suicide bereavement support charity Pete’s Dragons – boosting the cause to the tune of £1,760 with a pair of concerts.

The Exmouth-based charity - helping hundreds of people across Devon – is one close to the heart of the Big Noise Chorus.

Singers in the non-audition musical group, which has five choirs across the county, have experienced the loss of a loved-one to suicide.

Community group launches Love Topsham Card to encourage people to shop locally

Topsham, the picturesque estuary town five miles from Exeter, has launched a donation scheme and discount card, to encourage residents to shop locally whilst raising money for year-round activities to promote the town.

White Stuff is excited to announce the opening of its new shop in Totnes on the 1st March.

The shop will stand at 57 High Street and will feature a mix of clothing, footwear and accessories for men and women as well as homeware.

The 969 sq.ft. shop, which was historically a bank, will keep many of its original features such as the beautiful mahogany panelling, decorative tiles and the old lift which will be converted into a special kids’ play area. Teenager launches project to keep the homeless warm in Exeter

A project in Exeter, organised by a 15-year old girl, is looking to raise money to purchase hot water bottles for the homeless in Exeter.

Sophie Clist who is 15 and is from Axminster, is looking to receive enough donations for at least 100 hot water bottles to give out to the homeless and displaced on the streets to keep them warm during the bitterly cold nights.

A Tesco employee from the Tesco superstore in Exmouth is to feature on a Mother’s Day card sold across the UK to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Elizabeth Reynolds has had her personal story and photograph included on a card designed by Hallmark. It is hoped that the card and Elizabeth’s story will connect with and support other people affected by the disease this Mother’s Day, as well as raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK. Elizabeth’s card can now be found in all large Tesco stores.

Over 1,000 trees planted and more help is needed

Volunteers helped to put over 1,000 trees in the ground at community planting days held near Clyst Honiton recently.

By the end of the second planting day, volunteers had planted more than half of the total number of trees for Mosshayne farm, which meant they had completed the first wood on “the island” – the name of one of the new woods located between the River Clyst and a leat. It means that more than a thousand new trees are now in the ground.
