Work of domestic violence support services recognised

Inspired by the campaign 16 Days of Action, Associate Solicitor Sue Ellingham has been uncovering the work of support services in Devon.

The campaign, which runs from November 25 to December 10, seeks to raise awareness of Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse (DSVA).

Sue, who works for family law specialist The Family Law Company in Exeter was inspired to speak to eight Devon-based workers in DSVA support services to find out about their backgrounds and what their jobs entail. Devon & Cornwall and Dorset police today warned that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated as Euro 2016 gets underway in June.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland will take part in the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France. The competition begins on the 10th June and will run until 10th July.

This is the first time that three home nations have made a major competition since 1958 and will see millions of people watching the matches across the UK and in France.

A family law specialist has spoken out about domestic abuse after the recent media storm surrounding The Archers.

Mass domestic violence protests planned

A group of women from Devon are planning the city’s largest gathering against sexual violence on the streets this autumn.

The Reclaim the Night events are designed to promote public awareness about the levels of violence and harassment experienced by women and girls on our streets. Two events are planned; a preparation day of creativity on Saturday 21st November and the March itself on Thursday 26th November.

Devon Rape Crisis Service, SAFE, Exeter Feminists and the University Femsoc have joined forces to make this year the most visible protest yet about sexual violence....

Raising funds for vital support services

The Family Law Company’s Domestic Violence and Private Law Children Team held a coffee and cake afternoon to raise funds for two local organisations: SAFE (Stop Abuse for Everyone) and Splitz Support Service.

Staff from the law firm baked cakes, and the catering equipment was donated by South West Events Hire. The event was well attended by members of the judiciary and Court Service, counsellors, financial advisers and local barristers and solicitors.

Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding people that domestic abuse can happen to anyone and although Valentine’s Day is associated with love and romance, for some, it can prove a traumatic time of year.

The Force is running its ‘Is This Love?’ campaign which aims to raise awareness of the different aspects of abuse – emotional, financial, physical, and sexual.

Domestic abuse is the cruel misuse of power and control by one person over another. It can begin at any time, can be obvious or subtle and can happen suddenly or gradually.

World Cup domestic violence warning

The Home Office and The Association of Chief Police Officers are warning football supporters of harsh consequences if their World Cup celebrations turn sour.

From now until mid July, a poster and online advertising campaign will be used to communicate important messages about domestic violence to men aged 18 to 35.

All advertising will direct men to the Respect website and phone helpline for advice and support (0808 802 4040).

Posters will be displayed in male toilets in England and online adverts will be shown around football content during the World Cup 2014...
