Planners approve supercomputer building

The outlook seems bright for East Devon with news that that a building to house a major part of the Met Office’s proposed new high performance computer was given the go-ahead from district council planners yesterday (Thursday 13 November).

The modern building will provide much of the space for the so-called supercomputer on a site at Exeter Science Park, whilst the rest of the equipment will be housed on the Met Office’s existing site at Sowton, Exeter.

Outdoor gym for Broadclyst

The results are in! A voting event has been held by Broadclyst Parish Council Council for residents of Broadclyst to choose their new free-to-use outdoor gym.

The turnout was impressive, with 72 residents from all age-groups coming along to vote at The Pavilions on the afternoon of Friday 17 October.

Residents got to vote on which one of three designs they wanted installed, the winner with 56% of all votes was a design from Sutcliffe Play. This design features six pieces of equipment that up to ten people can use at once. The result now needs to be ratified by Broadclyst...

New study into Sidmouth to Feniton Trail

A major new study has been published looking at the possibility of developing a walking, cycling and riding route from Sidmouth to Feniton.

The concept of the 16km multi-use route, known informally as the Otter Trail, has been around for many years but has now been explored in more detail by the sustainable travel charity Sustrans. The study has follows a community meeting last year which highlighted the need for the report as part of the legacy work of the construction of Coleridge Bridge in Ottery St Mary, which opened to the public in August 2011. Public meetings are underway to discuss major changes to Devon’s children’s centres service as the county council prepare to cut £1.2 million from the service.

Time is running for business rate relief

Around 800 businesses across East Devon can still benefit from a scheme offering rate relief of up to £1,000 for the next two years. But time is running out to sign up to the scheme.

The initiative, adopted by East Devon District Council, is designed to give local retail businesses of a rateable value of less than £50,000 a chance to compete on a more level playing field with internet retailers.

Businesses to benefit include shops, post offices, restaurants, cafes, pubs and garden centres.

Government Inspector Anthony Thickett starts his 19-day hearing sessions of the public examination of the Draft Local Plan 2006-26 submitted by East Devon District Council on Tuesday, 11 February.
