A University of Exeter student has created an online resource to educate young people in the basics of British politics in the run-up to the General Election.

Prospective councillors disappoint

A group campaigning for better travel solutions in the south west areas of Exeter has asked all prospective councillors for Cowick, Alphington and St Thomas for their views on key issues such as whether or not they support a review of proposed measures, including a park and ride on the site of Oaklands Riding School. Single parents could decide marginals

The fate of 96 of the 100 most marginal seats in England and Wales could be decided by single parents, new analysis from Gingerbread has found].

Single parents have headed one in four families in the UK for the last decade [2] but this is the first time that their potential voting power has been matched against majorities in marginal constituency seats. In 96 of the 100 most marginal constituencies in England and Wales, the number of single parents outweighs the majority with which the seat was last won.

Candidates urged to back SW investment opportunity

Regen SW has today written to MPs and Parliamentary candidates in the south west urging them to support the development of a world-leading renewable energy industry in the next Parliament by signing the South West Renewable Energy 2015 General Election Manifesto.

The Green Party has launched its General Election Manifesto, ‘For the Common Good’.

Greens say the manifesto, which can be found here , sets out a bold, ambitious plan for a fairer society and safer planet and there is a strong emphasis on commitments to restoring and extending public services and tackling climate change.

Cancer mum's life-saving plea

A Tiverton mum fighting cancer is backing an appeal from Cancer Research UK to save more lives, as new figures show one in two people will be diagnosed with the disease.

With around three weeks to go until the General Election, Ellie King, 32, is rallying people across the South West to get behind the charity’s Cross Cancer Out campaign and make sure their future MP is committed to beating cancer sooner.

Ellie was preparing for the birth of her baby in November 2012 when she received the news that no expecting mother would ever wish to hear – that she had cancer.

Countryside vote may have unexpected teeth

As political campaigners across the UK start knocking on doors ahead of the general election, rural insurer, NFU Mutual is warning that those chasing the countryside vote might find it has unexpected teeth.

Over the past two years, the insurer paid out over £1 million in claims for dogs biting visitors to rural properties. With the general election only weeks away, the insurer is reminding property owners that whatever their political persuasion, they have a duty of care to ensure that political canvassers are safe on their property.
