Rob Hunter believes competition to get into the Exeter Chiefs starting line-up ahead of the new Aviva Premiership season will help to drive standards up during pre-season.
Forwards coach Hunter said he was “pretty pleased” after watching the English champions notch up victories over the Cornish Pirates (47-15) and Dragons (50-24) during Saturday’s Double Header at Sandy Park.
The Chiefs split their playing squad into two different line-ups for the two games, thus allowing a large nucleus to press their claims for a potential starting spot in the club’s opening league...

The man charged with overseeing Gareth Steenson’s testimonial game at Sandy Park this Saturday (AUGUST 12), Tony ‘Spreaders’ Spreadbury has heaped praise on the Exeter Chiefs.
The former international referee has since retired but is now head of RFU officials.
And he said he was relishing the chance to pull on his boots again.
Steenson is celebrating 10 years as an Exeter Chief and as part of his celebratory year is staging a game featuring an Exeter select side who will take on a Classic Lions team featuring Mike Tindall.
Exeter Chiefs legend Gareth Steenson has announced his most high profile signing ahead of his testimonial game at Sandy Park later this month… club chief executive Tony Rowe!
Fans are going to witness the Sandy Park supremo running out in a Chiefs strip for the first (and only) time.
Mr Rowe has led the Chiefs from the lower leagues of rugby to Premiership champions.
But apart from the odd appearance on the pitch after a game, his role has been mostly behind the scenes.

Luke Cowan-Dickie believes Exeter Chiefs will ‘thrive’ on the challenge of trying to defend their Aviva Premiership crown this season.
Having claimed their maiden English title back in May, defeating rivals Wasps in extra time at Twickenham, Rob Baxter’s side are gearing up nicely for their new 2017/18 campaign, which kicks-off on Friday, September 1 with a trip to Gloucester.
And with just a month or so to go before that seasonal opener, the England hooker insists the mood is buoyant at Sandy Park as the Chiefs ready themselves for another big season ahead.
Jack Nowell is back and ‘roaring’ to go ahead of the new season, following his successful tour of New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions – and he’s turning out for a new team!
But worry not Exeter Chiefs fans, for the young star is only making a guest appearance in a select squad put together by club legend Gareth Steenson for his testimonial game.
Jack has volunteered to join his teammate when the match is played on August 12. However, it is not yet clear in what capacity.

Former Gloucester powerhouse Junior Paramore has said he cannot understand why Exeter Chiefs legend Gareth Steenson hasn’t been picked for his national side.
Paramore has been named amongst a Classic Lions side that will take on a Chiefs select XV at Sandy Park on August 12.
And he was full of praise for the Exeter fly-half.
He said: “As a rugby player you always set goals to achieve something but to be the number one choice for such a long period of time tells you everything you need to know about the effort Gareth puts in on and off the field.
