Commuters set to take front seat in new project to cut traffic congestion

Commuters are set to become the driving force behind a new initiative designed to help reduce traffic congestion in and around Exeter.

Experts from the University of Exeter are leading a new project to help determine what factors influence the time and routes chosen by people travelling to and from the city.

As part of the pioneering project, they are launching a new online survey - found at www.commute-exeter.com - aimed at anyone aged 17 and over who commutes for work or study.

Bins now collected in Newtown area

Bins in the Newtown area have now been collected, after Devon & Cornwall Police gave Exeter City Council the green light to go back into the area following a serious incident earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, the Police asked the City Council to suspend its rubbish and recycling collections while they carried out a search of the area after a man was attacked.

A spokesman for the City Council said that its crews were allowed to resume collections on Friday lunchtime.

People in Exeter can find out what is being done in the city to assist those who are homeless at a drop-in event next week.

The City Council – working in partnership with Teignbridge District Council – has drawn up a Homelessness Strategy for Exeter and Teignbridge.

650 people attend bus station forum

Around 650 attended an open forum to have their say on plans for a brand new bus station for Exeter.

Exeter City Council said the turnout was "impressive" and that everyone's views would be analysed to help inform the next phase of detailed design.

A resolution to grant outline planning permission for the site was obtained in January, subject to the completion of a legal agreement.

Turning unused commercial properties into new homes

Unused commercial properties in Exeter could be turned into much needed homes, Exeter City Council has said.

The local authority has set up a dedicated councillors group to look into the issue and is asking local people to help identify suitable properties.

The Group is particularly interested in identifying properties which are located in residential areas, are in a poor condition and have a detrimental effect on the local area.

People are being reminded that they can have their say on plans for a new bus station in Exeter at an open forum today Thursday (3 March).

Exeter City Council will be holding the event at the Corn Exchange in Exeter between 8am and 5.30pm.

The Council want to hear from members of the public and interested groups to inform the concept design of the new bus station. The Council want to hear people's views on:

• user facilities • coach arrangements • on street bus stops • arrangements during construction

Council considers initiative to help make Exeter less wasteful

The Green Party in Exeter has welcomed Exeter City Council’s response to their proposals to set up a ‘Food Waste Roundtable’ to take action on reducing the city’s vast quantity of food waste.

Food waste makes up 36% of ‘black bin’ waste in Exeter and ends up in the incinerator at Marsh Barton.

The Green Party has long campaigned for Exeter to have separate food waste collections, like other areas in Devon, so that this waste stream is removed from ‘black bin’ waste and treated differently.
