First solar carport frames erected at Exeter multi-storey car park

SunGift Energy has today crane-lifted the first ‘solar carport’ frames onto the roof of Exeter City Council’s Mary Arches car park.

It is believed to be the first solar installer in the UK carry out such an installation on the roof of a multi-story car park.

The start of work is particularly significant as it is the most technologically complex solar solution that SunGift has carried out to-date, with the company’s experts solving a number of technical challenges before the project could be started.

Spirit of the Exe: An Exe-travaganza

Everybody is invited to an Exe-travaganza on the Piazza Terracina at Exeter Quay from 11am on Saturday 1 August.

Spirit of the Exe is a free festival for all the family which will celebrate everything that's good about the estuary. As well as being a globally important site for wildlife and an area steeped in maritime history, its also a hub of leisure activities, as well as being a place of beauty and pride for local communities.

Cathedral Green will be home to a new luxury retailer later this year as Michael Spiers Jewellers has confirmed that it will be relocating to Exeter’s most prestigious location.

The South West jewellery and watch retailer will move from its current Exeter premises on Castle Street to take the keys of 22 Cathedral Yard – currently home to Lugets of Exeter – on 1 April.

After an extensive refit, the new showroom is due to open on 16 June.

Pensioner bonds availability to be extended

Chancellor George Osborne has (8 February 2015) announced the government will extend the availability of its hugely popular 65 plus pensioner bonds.

Highlighting latest sales figures which show it has seen the biggest sale of any retail financial product in Britain’s modern history, the Chancellor confirmed that the pensioner bonds will now be on sale for 4 months, until 15 May 2015, so that everyone who wants to invest can do so.

Schools, youth groups and families across the South West are invited to mark Shrove Tuesday by raising funds for vulnerable children and young people with a pancake-themed challenge. Action for Children is holding its first national Great Pancake Challenge this year – and the charity wants children aged 7-11 years old from across the South West to join the fun by holding sponsored flips, stacking tall towers, decorating, or creating their own unusual pancake activities. New champions for Leading Women UK

New Leading Women UK Champions for Exeter in 2015 will be unveiled this week at a networking meeting at the city’s Oddfellow’s restaurant.

Bridge demolition timelapse

The South Devon Link Road project team has released timelapse footage of some of the activity undertaken during recent engineering works.

The footage shows the removal of the old accommodation bridge, which was removed during the work over the Christmas holiday period.

Since the project began, timelapse footage has been gathered at locations along the 5.5 km route, and some of these cameras were temporarily relocated to capture the action during the Christmas works.

Get your wellies on for this year's Bogtastic!

Don't miss your chance to get properly wet and muddy at this year's Bogtastic! event on Exmoor on Friday 31 May.

The event features fun activities for all the family and the opportunity to visit a bog restored by the Exmoor Mires Project, as well as all-weather activities including stream-dipping, dam-making, crafts, undercover exhibitions, a sawmill tour and guided walks exploring the local nature and heritage.

Keep glass and mirrors away from the sunshine

Sunshine is forecast over the next few days! Every year at this time Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service attends a number of fires caused by the sun’s rays focussing through or onto glass, and then setting fire to nearby objects.

At this time of year the sun is low in the sky, and shines directly through windows, so any mirrored or glass items close to the window may re-focus the sun’s rays onto combustible items, often curtains, heating them up to a point where they spontaneously ignite into flames.
