A major food company which was devastated by flooding is calling on other businesses to take action to prepare for severe weather.

Greencore is urging businesses to make sure they know their flood risk as the Environment Agency launches its annual Flood Action campaign,

Greencore employs more than 11,000 people and supplies all the major supermarket chains in the UK. The company was hit by flooding in October 2000, when more than a metre of water flowed through its Selby factory, resulting in damage which led to a multi-million pound insurance claim. A weather warning of heavy rain has been issued for Devon.

Outbreaks of rain will turn heavy at times during Tuesday (27 October) and the Met Office is warning that there is a risk of local surface water flooding.

Chief forecaster at the Exeter-based agency said: “A slow moving front will bring heavy bursts of rain, giving the potential for over 50mm of rain within a few hours.

“Leaves may impede drainage, increasing the risk of some flooding, for example, to sections of road.”

The five day regional forecast is as follows:

Today: Much of the region...

Starcross and Cockwood tidal defence scheme public exhibition

The Environment Agency is holding a public exhibition on Friday 16 October 2015 to provide people with more information about the Starcross and Cockwood tidal defence scheme.

The Environment Agency is currently investigating options to manage the risk of tidal flooding at the coastal villages of Starcross and Cockwood on the Exe Estuary. The scheme is estimated to reduce flood risk to over 600 properties. It was accelerated as part of the March 2015 Budget announcement regarding England’s 6-year flood defence programme.

The exhibition is being held from 12 noon to 8pm on...

Survey work to be carried out around Alma Bridge

Devon County Council is preparing to undertake survey work in the area around Alma Bridge to explore erosion of the nearby cliffs, after accepting that the bridge is likely to be under threat at some point in the future.

The surveys will provide a base line on which to compare future erosion of the cliff face that protects the bridge. The authority has confirmed that it is looking at a number of options to maintain a link to the South West Coast Path over the River Sid, and it will start monitoring erosion in the surrounding area later this month.

The County Council is...

Topsham prepared for winter's worst

Residents along the river frontage in the estuary-side town of Topsham were full of praise for the flooding exercise that took place on Wednesday evening of this week.

The exercise was aimed at raising awareness of the risk of flooding in the town – which suffered from floods in the storms of February 2014 – which allowed residents to test their own property defences.

The exercise also tested the readiness of Topsham’s recently recruited Flood Wardens, 10 of whom were deployed across 5 sectors covering the town’s 1.5 mile river frontage, from the recreation ground through...

Rivers on flood alert as heavy rain forecast

The Environment Agency has issued flood alert warnings for Devon's rivers as heavy rain is expected to hit the region.

Outbreaks of rain, which will be persistent and heavy at times, are expected to spread east across southern England during Wednesday morning.

Many parts of Devon have already seen large rainfall accumulations over the past few days and therefore this further rain may cause come minor local surface water flooding. Lightning may be an additional hazard.

The public should be aware that some local disruption to transport looks likely.

Crediton residents asked to pool flood info

Crediton residents have so far provided a wealth of information about flooding vulnerabilities around the town as part of a community project being led by the University of Exeter, and now researchers are calling for more people to get involved.

Flooding effectively cuts off Crediton when the Rivers Yeo and Creedy burst their banks and the project needs residents to provide evidence about specific places that flood, offer their views about the causes and suggest ideas about what can be done to prevent future flooding.

The Crediton Flood Resilience Group, comprising...
