Flood funding will help local communities

Devon is to benefit from a share of £5 million of funding unveiled by the Government this week.

A partnership of Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council, Torbay Council and the Environment Agency will receive just over £488,000 from the Flood Resilience Community Pathfinder scheme, launched by Defra in December 2012.

The funding, announced by Environment Minister Richard Benyon, will go towards a near £730,000 package to improve local community resilience so that individuals and businesses are better prepared against the risk of flooding. A total of 24 communities will...

Superfast model brain to predict flooding during heavy rain

Heavy rain has once again resulted in widespread flooding across the country. With climate change likely to cause further severe weather events in the coming years, methods of quickly predicting flooding will become increasingly important.

A team of engineers and scientists from the University of Exeter has developed a model, 1,000 times faster than existing flood prediction systems, which can rapidly predict when and where flooding will occur. The model uses artificial intelligence to ‘learn’, in the same way that biological neural networks in the human brain process data....

Devon welcomes emergency funding

Devon County Council has welcomed confirmation from the Government that it has qualified for further emergency funding. Following a successful lobbying campaign for Government support, the County Council is now expecting to receive a total of around £2.5 million of Bellwin funding towards the cost of temporary repair and clean-up following last year’s floods.

It comes after the announcement from The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) that grants will be provided to cover part of the cost of damage caused by flood events in the county in September and December....

70 dead as torrential rains continue to flood Mozambique

Torrential rains in Mozambique have killed an estimated 70 people, and left approximately 150,000 displaced.

People are fleeing the most badly affected areas, and seeking shelter, others remain on the roofs of their homes.

Preliminary information indicates at least $15 million will be needed for the relief operation. The United Nations warned that the amount is expected to go up as assessment teams release more information.

In 2000, the southern African nation suffered devastating floods that killed at least 700 people and displaced millions. (NewsPoint)

Hazardous driving conditions on roads around Exeter

On the roads around Exeter, there are reports of flooding on the A377 at Cowley Hill, Cowley, near the St Andrew's Road junction.

Hazardous driving conditions have also been reported on the A380 Telegraph Hill in Ashcombe after the B3192 junction, because of ice, rain and reduction in visibility.

Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding motorists to ‘think safety’ before setting out on the roads during the winter months and to allow extra time for your journeys.

Heavy Rain Not A Problem For Cranbrook

East Devon District Council has been happy to report that the new town of Cranbrook in East Devon was unaffected by the recent bad weather and its drainage system has coped magnificently against unprecedented levels of rain.

This first major test of the new community drainage system has proven that local concerns about flooding were unfounded, but as Cllr Andrew Moulding, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Partnerships explains, this was no surprise to East Devon District Council:

“The only thing Cranbrook’s been flooded with is unfounded rumours. We did not...

Tel Aviv highway shut down due to major flooding

A main highway in Tel Aviv, Ayalon, has been shut due to extreme flooding which is currently affecting Israel.

The cause of the accident is thought to be due to the adverse weather conditions. Magen David Adom rescue services pronounced the three casualties dead at the scene.
