It’s almost that time of year, when National Trust staff at Knightshayes Court get to hone their hair dressing skills as the topiary in the Formal Garden receives its annual hair cut
The fox and hound topiary was planted Sir John and Lady Joyce Heathcoat-Amory, the last members of the family to live at Knightshayes, who were passionate and well respected gardeners and who dedicated much of their later lives to the creation of the renowned gardens.
The topiary consists of seven hounds and a fox, along with four large heads modelled on Talbot hounds. The Talbot hound, an...

Gardener Helen Brown has developed a haven for wildlife which is just bursting with late summer colour and buzzing with insects. The garden has been developed over the past 14 years and has mixed tree, shrub and herbaceous borders filled with unusual plants; a pond and natural stream, with shady woodland area. The garden is designed to blend into the countryside beyond and enjoys lovely views towards East Hill and the River Otter.
The Brewin Dolphin Garden has been awarded a Silver Gilt Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Their show garden was designed by Matthew Childs and is the more remarkable as it is his first ever garden at Chelsea, having won Best in Show at Hampton Court in 2013.

The nucleus hive, also known as a beginner’s hive does not usually produce honey during its first year, however, the Princesshay bees have produced 3 pounds of honey in just four months, which has equated to three jars of delicious, dark runny honey.

Curator of Plants and Gardens Kevin Frediani is saying good bye to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park after five extraordinary years. He leaves a considerable legacy – but it is as much about people as plants.
Kevin grew up in Ashburton, on the edge of Dartmoor, and has worked for the Queen at Windsor Great Park and at Hortus Botanicus in the Netherlands. “Growing plants in a zoo full of animals is always a challenge – but I think I have helped to realise the potential of plants in what was the world’s first combined zoo and botanic garden.”
