Killerton House has moved away from oil-fired heating by installing biomass boilers powered by sustainably sourced wood pellets.

The boilers will be powered by 55 tonnes of wood pellets a year, improving energy efficiency, sustainability and reliability inside the historic property. The switch will save the charity around 24,000 litres of oil and almost £14,000 in running costs a year. The old boilers were in the basement of the 18th century house, alongside a colony of lesser horseshoe bats. As recommended by a bat survey undertaken before the work began, great care was taken to...

Exeter Greens have accused the Labour run Exeter city council of 'spinning' recycling rates.

They say the council’s latest public messaging on recycling suggest a massive increase in the amount of waste being recycled to 49%, while a recent scrutiny committee report says recycling rates in the city have actually fallen in the last year to 34%.

The discrepancy is apparently due to a new way of measuring recycling rates, which Greens say is being used to mask a worsening situation.

Diana Moore, lead Green Party candidate for Exeter St David’s ward said: “This is pure...

New ‘green’ energy system for leisure centre

A new renewable energy system has recently been installed at Dawlish Leisure Centre, as part of the much needed upgrade to the building management system.

The new biomass heating system is fuelled by wood pellets, which burn more cleanly than traditional fossil fuels and are practically carbon neutral because they use natural resources.

The installation of the biomass heating system is part of Teignbridge District Council’s ongoing plan to reduce waste and the reliance on fossil fuels, become more energy efficient, save on costs and protect the environment for future...

The Green Party in Exeter has welcomed Exeter City Council’s response to their proposals to set up a ‘Food Waste Roundtable’ to take action on reducing the city’s vast quantity of food waste.

Food waste makes up 36% of ‘black bin’ waste in Exeter and ends up in the incinerator at Marsh Barton.

The Green Party has long campaigned for Exeter to have separate food waste collections, like other areas in Devon, so that this waste stream is removed from ‘black bin’ waste and treated differently.

A petition set up by Exeter Greens calling for food waste not to be...

The environmental achievements of a Devon-based charity have been recognised with a top international accreditation.

In the past year Devon Wildlife Trust has targeted the impact it and its 80 staff have on the environment. As a result the charity has been able to reduce its gas consumption at its Cricklepit Mill headquarters in Exeter by 55%. Its electricity consumption across all its properties has also been reduced by 20%. A hydro-turbine installed at the Mill is also helping The Trust generate 40 kilowatts of its own clean, green electricity each day from water power –...
