Exeter Hair Academy open day

The Skills Group Hair Academy in Exeter is holding an open day on Monday 10 November for potential hairdressing and barbering apprentices and salon owners who may be considering taking on an apprentice.

The event is part of Skills Group’s current ‘Learn a trade and get paid’ campaign to raise awareness of apprenticeship opportunities.

Young people are invited to attend from 10am-3pm to meet the hairdressing training team, and to take part in have-a-go sessions, demonstrations and master classes.

Hospiscare support group co-ordinator retires

Exeter charity Hospiscare said a sad farewell to Barry Carpenter who has retired after 14 years as the support group co-ordinator.

During his time helping Hospiscare support groups across Exeter, East and Mid Devon, a total of £2.5m has been raised for the charity - including the Exeter group raising £1.25m.

At a farewell party Hospiscare chief executive Glynis Atherton praised Barry's hard work, support and encouragement and hands on approach to the role. She said the many extra hours he had given unpaid to the charity amounted to two years.

£125,000 available for community projects

Devon Community Foundation is delighted to announce that its Summer Grant Round is open with £125,000 available for Community Projects across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay helping to build thriving communities.

For this round the Foundation are looking to support community projects mainly run by volunteers with an income of less than £30,000 pa which are helping to bring the local community together, with grants between £500 and £1,000. Green light for St Luke’s refurbishment project

A major refurbishment project at the University of Exeter medical school will begin later this month after being granted funding and planning permission.

The work expected to cost over £10.5 million will improve on facilities at the University’s St Luke’s Campus by providing more space for teaching and student study.

Slimming World Consultant Penni Ball has proved she's red hot after winning a Ruby Award for her work in helping tackle obesity in the area.

Penni who runs the Pinhoe Slimming World groups at America Hall, was delighted to receive the award for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to start losing weight and improve their health.

The accolade sees Penni, who lost 3.5 stone with Slimming World herself, become a Ruby Consultant.

We willl get together ahead of Salisbury Playhouse's The Recruiting Officer to read the script over a coffee.

This group is suitable for anyone who loves drama, wants to meet people and get to grips with plays they may not have heard or seen before.
