New homes offer reduced heating bills

Construction of 20 new homes at three sites in Exeter is now well underway.

The accommodation at Bennett Square (Mincinglake) and Brookway (Whipton) is expected to be completed in spring 2015. Newport Road (Countess Wear) expected to be finished by summer 2015.

The new homes will be let to families in housing need. Three of the new houses will be built to full wheelchair accessible standards.

All of the homes are being built to the Passivhaus standard, meaning they will be cheaper to heat than a standard home and provide stable internal temperatures all year round...

Scores face losing homes every day in SW

Every day, 36 households in the South West are at risk of losing their home, new analysis from Shelter reveals.

The research, based on data recorded by the Ministry of Justice found that in the past year more than 13,200 homes in the South West are at risk of eviction or repossession, the equivalent of 36 every day.

It also identified the latest hotspots across the region where people are most likely to face losing their home, with Weymouth and Portland and Gloucester topping the list. Other hotspots in the region’s top ten included Bristol, Bournemouth and Plymouth....

EDDC aims to protect vulnerable

Teams from the Housing Service at East Devon District Council are working with partners to minimise the impact that cuts in Devon County Council (DCC) funding will have on over 1,300 elderly and vulnerable tenants. The cuts mean a reduction of over half a million pounds in this sector in the next financial year alone.

EDDC’s main aim is to ensure that those tenants who wish to continue living in their own homes are able to do so. And tenants will have a say in the type and implementation of any changes.

Have your say on houses of multiple occupation

There's still time for people to have their say on proposals to extend the principles of licensing for houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) not already covered by the current scheme.

Landlords, tenants, partnership agencies and the public in general are being encouraged to complete a short questionnaire by visiting the City Council's website at www.exeter.gov.uk/additionalhmolicensing

Internationally acclaimed chef, Michael Caines joined Eagle One Homes Director, Chris Fayers to officially open the Spinnakers showhome complex on Saturday (12 April).

Developed by Eagle One Homes, Spinnakers is the newly completed waterside development of 14, two and three bedroom apartments on Exmouth Quay.

Help to Buy:158 homes sold in Exeter and E. Devon

158 newly-built homes in Exeter and East Devon have been bought using equity loans from the government’s ‘Help to Buy’ scheme according to new figures released today. The 'Help to Buy' equity loan scheme, which was launched in April last year, enables people to buy a newly-built home with a deposit of at least 5% of the property price, while the government offers a loan of up to 20%. More than 130 guests gathered in the Club Room of Dean Clarke House, on Southernhay East, to celebrate the launch of the Show Apartment – the first to be completed as part of the £8 million refurbishment of one of Exeter’s most iconic buildings by Burrington Estates and Staunch.

Residents in a DCH housing scheme in Exeter have come together for a ‘community clean up’. Arena Park’s Green Group braved the cold weather to get out on their estate to clean up their local park and hedgerows.

Lesley Browne, Community Development Worker at DCH, said: “Following the recent storms lots of litter has been blown around the estate and the residents wanted to proactively give the area a clean up. All ages came together to help out, DCH provided litter picks, protective gloves and collection bags to support the event.”

First time buyers choose to stay close to home

Young people in Exeter who are flying the nest are not getting very far - instead choosing to buy their first property just a few miles from home.

A survey conducted by One Poll, on behalf of leading housebuilder Barratt Homes, has revealed that almost 70% of first time buyers in Exeter under the age of 35 are likely to move within a 20 mile radius of their family home.

Female buyers are even keener to stay close, with 25% preferring to only move up to 10 miles away, compared to 32% of males who would consider moving up to 20 miles away.

Exeter residents no longer exempt from Bedroom Tax

Thirty-one people in Exeter will no longer be exempt from the "Bedroom Tax" after changes to government legislation, announced by Exeter City Council earlier today. The "tax" sees people in social housing lose up to a quarter of their housing benefit if they are considered to be under-occupying the property by the Government.
