A public consultation has been launched today (Friday 3 October) by Devon County Council on proposed savings to its highways and traffic management service budget.

The County Council has already reduced its highways revenue budget by £18.5 million since 2010. However, it now needs to cut a further £3.4 million in 2015/16 as part of the £100 million savings required by 2017, due to the ongoing austerity measures imposed by the coalition Government.

Have your say on future of Exeter's budget

People are being asked to help shape the future for Exeter.

Exeter City Council has launched a major public consultation as it looks to save a further £4 million over the next three years.

The authority wants to find out what services are most important to the people of Exeter at a time of deepening public spending cuts.

The City Council’s grant from central government has already shrunk from £12 million in 2011-12 to £7.7 million in the current financial year. Now it is bracing itself for further reductions, to around £5 million, by 2017-18.

In honour of International Credit Union Day on Thursday 16 October 2014, the Archdeacon of Exeter is launching ‘Join a Devon Credit Union Month’ when he hopes Devon people will join up during October to keep their savings in Devon.

Payday lenders condemned by CAB

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has said the route to more competition in the payday loans market is for banks to offer responsible alternatives.

Provisional findings from the Competition and Markets Authority has found payday loan customers could be paying £5 to £10 more per loan due to lack of competition.

Rise in people struggling with rent

More people in Exeter are struggling to pay rents and council tax according to the latest figures from Exeter Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB).

The local charity reports major increases in some of the types of debt and money problems being reported among the 5,000 people who visited the charity for advice in the last year.

Plans to combat £1m overspend in Exeter housing

Exeter City Council has set out a new action plan on how it maintains and manages housing in response to a £1 million overspend from the council’s housing revenue account (HRA).

The action plan could see some tenants prevented from transferring into a new council house or even face eviction or fines if their property is in a poor state of repair.
