The Government has announced that it plans to introduce a new law capping the interest charges of payday loans.

The cap which has yet to be set will be decided by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the new industry regulator.

The announcement marks a turnaround in policy as the government and the FCA have previously said that a cap was unnecessary.

The cap has been included in the Banking Reform bill which is currently going through parliament.

A similar cap has been introduced in Austrailia which has limited interest to 4% per month with a single one-...

What's wrong with Dragon's Den?

Like many people I quite like the TV programme Dragon's Den - I like the ideas pitched with a sprinkling of adrenaline and the hope. I love the hope. But I really don't like that the contestants (that's what they are, right?) have to persuade individuals, with their piles of money sitting gloatingly on the table in front of them, to patronise their ideas. Really I'd like to see all the contestants have to decide which idea deserves the money - even if it means supporting someone else's idea and not realising their own.

I've always been really interested in collective decision...

The majority shareholder of Exeter based airline Flybe has sold its entire shareholding.

The 48.1% stake owned by the Walker Family Trust through Rosedale Aviation Holdings Ltd was sold for £25.2m.

The move marks the end of a long standing relationship between the airline and the Walker family.

Late steel magnate and former owner of Blackburn Rovers Jack Walker bought the majority share of Jersey European airways in 1983, which was rebranded as Flybe in 2002.

The news comes after Monday’s announcement that Flybe will be cutting 500 jobs in a restructuring...

Russia to build the worlds most powerful financial centre

The billionaire capital of the world, Moscow, Europe’s largest city, wants to establish itself as a financial hub, despite loud calls that Russia is a ‘bad investment.’ Much attention is paid to Moscow’s billionaires as financial circles watch with intrigue as football clubs, Greek islands, and New York penthouses are bought up by Russia’s new class of wealth. Hedge funds first arrived in Moscow alongside the explosion of the Russian stock market in 2005-06, but the Western-managed firms, without specific exposure to the local market, didn’t emerge as hedge funds, but rather extra-big...

Giving Your Pension the Attention it deserves

Tim Walker Head of Office and Divisional Director of Brewin Dolphin’s Exeter office, looks at the advantages of Self Invested Personal Pensions.

Self Invested Personal Pensions or SIPPs have become increasingly popular in recent years among those looking to build up a pot of savings for their retirement. While SIPPs enjoy the same tax benefits as traditional pension schemes and work in a similar way, they can offer greater flexibility and give you access to a wider range of investments.

With standard personal pension schemes, your investments are usually managed for you...

Are you entitled to compensation?

Consumers in Devon could be entitled to compensation if they have lost money as a result of their dealings with any one of several failed financial firms that Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) has declared in default.

FSCS is the UK’s statutory compensation scheme for customers of regulated financial services firms. A declaration of default means FSCS is satisfied the firm is unable to pay claims for compensation made against it. FSCS does not charge individual consumers for using its service.

The Scheme has already started paying compensation in respect of the...

South West sitting on a £170 million fortune in leftover foreign currency

A YouGov poll, commissioned by easyJet, today highlights that adults in the South West could have an extraordinary £170million of leftover foreign currency lying around at home.
